Hi there,

I have just had a screening phone call with HR from Roland Burger. I was struggling when he asked me "Why us? Why Roland Burger? Why not MBB?".
Some reasons such as having an opportunity to learn, to diversify knowledge...maybe not persuasive enough for them. I could not tell them the real answer is that I failed all the MBBs, and Roland Burger is kind of a second-best.
I tried to do research to see what differentiates RB from other MBBs, but there is not much out there.
Could you guys give me a suggestion on what I should do when I had to answer these questions? They are becoming extremely difficult to find a good answer, especially when you have interviews with Tier 2 consulting such as RB, L.E.K...?

Thank you very much.

Hi,

To best answer these questions - make sure you read up about the firm and its culture and values. Everyone wants to be told they are special and unique, understand what makes each firm unique

·         For example, McKinsey almost always works at the client site because they think it is critical to build sustainable long-term relationships to be the best consultant, Bain on the other hand typically works from their home office. Similarly, McKinsey has a global staffing model and BCG does not etc.

·         Go to events and information sessions to learn more. Firms will tell you what they want to hear, they also want to know you have made the effort to go to events when possible and are genuinely interested. If you do go - make sure you reference that you went and how it helped you learn about the firm in your answer

·         It is always a good idea to talk about the specific people you know at the company and why they helped you in your decision-making process and how that matters to you

Best,

Udayan

#1 BCG coach | MBB | Tier 2 | Digital, Tech, Platinion | 100% personal success rate (8/8) | 95% candidate success rate

Hi there,

You need to emphasize the differences here! I think there's no point beating around the bush and you can/should acknowledge "hey, look, of course MBB are the most prestigious BUT".

Then, overindex/emphasize on how much you value culture, or workstyle, or x types of projects.

This is the 2nd reason it's important to network (outside of referrals), you can get a better idea of the true nature of the firms to which you're applying and have better standing for the "why us" question....get networking!

The story of your life is in progress, how does RB fit into that story at this stage- their culture, values, poeple you know there, pipeline of work, attitude towards risk/innovation, reputation, Digital transformation projects etc- basically you need a convincing answer as to why RB is a better FIT both ways at this stage. Dont downplay MBB, acknowledge they are great, but RB is a better option for you. Get your hands on whatever research you can, talk to current/previous employees etc.

Also, answer why should RB hire you? What do you bring to them- values, skills, experiences, network, innovative ideas etc. Go a step further and talk about your 90 day plan when you get hired. Come across as if you are already in the firm!

That's a painful question... I would spin it more neutrally by saying "Yes, I have applied to MBB but I'm keen to explore a range of firms to see where I see myself fit best".
