I have recently received an offer from Delta Partners. How does the employment reference/check for Delta Partners like? Do they check performance or ask for reference or something?

Hello!

Background checks are nothing to be worried about, as long as you haven´t lied (e.g., saying that you graduated from Uni X when you didn´t, or that you worked in Company Y 2 years instead of 6 months). Minor things, such as 1 month differences, etc. don´t matter.

Most of the times, they are done by 3rd party companies to which the job is externalized. If they find any discrepancy, they contact you first and clarify it with you.

For instance, with the MIT background check I had the issue that the external name of my Amazon job is not the same as the one Amazon uses internally -and that was the name given in the certificated that Amazon gives oficially-. It was easily solved by an HR doc that explained that both were the same thing.

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

Hi there,

In a reference check, companies (normally third parties) will usually contact by email a representative of your former employer and ask for:

  • Confirmation of employment period
  • Confirmation of job title
  • Reason for leaving (not always asked)

The exact information asked may also depend on the regulation in a particular country.

Best,

Francesco

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the offer from Delta Partners!

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for quite a lot of users, so I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • First of all, you do not need to provide any additional information (this is something many people still believe).
  • The service provider performing the background check (this will not be your future employer itself) will use the application files your provided and check their validity.
  • In most countries, personal rights do not allow past employers or universities to disclose much information about you besides the fact that you have worked/ studied there. As such, the background check is rather superficial and should mainly detect blatant lies.

In case you want a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare your upcoming career entry, please feel free to contact me directly.

I hope this helps,

Hagen

Hi there,

I assume you're not actually asking how to they physically do it (i.e. the IT system they use, what level employee does it, who they call, what they say on they phone, etc.). :P

Ultimately, all they care about is that you worked at and attended the places that you said you did, when you did, in the role that you say.

As long as you didn't lie on your resume, you're safe!

Hi there,

Backgrond check does not include reference check. That is not a standard practice in consulting (and it wouldn't be a positive practice). They will just confirm that you worked where you say you worked for the time and period you mentioned on your resume.

So it's just a confirmation of your resume, not of your “quality”. If you didn't lie, there won't be a problem.
