Anyone got any good resources for how they are keeping up to date with the wider business world and particularly health and life sciences for case prep?

I know FT is good for general understanding of what's happening with the economy/business.

I'm UK based applying for UK offices.

Hi there,

Personally, I love robinhood snacks, the FT, the Economist, and then there are a few podcasts I keep up with.

For health and life sciences specifically, you could go to those sections of McKinsey, Bain, BCG, LEK, etc. and read their white papers/projects.

Hi there,

It's great that you're interested in keeping up with the industry, but it's not something that is actually critical for your success in the interview (unless you are applying for a specialised role where being aware of the recent trends in the industry is essential for your role).

Consulting interviews test for skills and less so for knowledge, so don't stress too much about having to know everything that is happening at the moment in your target industry.

Aside from FT, I'd also recommend the Economist, which comes in both written and audio format and it can also be entertaining at times.

Best of luck with the prep!
Cristian

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, for the wider business world, in addition to the Financial Times, I would advise you to consider resources like The Economist, Bloomberg, or Reuters. These platforms provide excellent coverage of global business news, trends, and insights that can be crucial for case preparation.
  • Moreover, specifically for life science and health care, you may have a look at the life science and health care sections from the websites of McKinsey, BCG, Bain, LEK and others. They often publish reports and case studies that provide deep insights into these sectors. These resources will offer you not just news, but also in-depth analysis and trends in these industries.
  • Lastly, please keep in mind that while it is expected for you to have a basic understanding of the dominating industries in the UK, unless you are an expert hire, interviewers will focus on assessing your business judgement, not business knowledge.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

FT can continue remaining a good long-term tool to get what you want. Online sources on PrepLounge and elsewhere can be good capsules of information.

A crash course or cheat-sheet can also be facilitated by a combination of ChatGPT and fact-checking.

Something like this could be a starting point - “You are trainerGPT, a coach that will teach me about the first 80% knowledge about industries/sectors. I am preparing for Management Consulting case interviews and want to become better at solving cases by understanding industries better. Please start with the global taxi industry.”

Hello,

For newspapers, WSJ and FT are your go-to. For business-related newsletters, check out Axios and Robinhood Snacks. Axios have some healthcare-focused newsletters which might be helpful too.
