Full-time position at MBB (US office) without internships

Dear Community,

Columbia Business School offers a J-term MBA program, which goes without summer internships. The question is, how important is it to do an internship in order to get a permanent position at the US MBB? I am not from the US and have zero management consulting WE.

Thank you in advance!

Always possible, especially that CBS is clearly a target school for MBB. Just consider that your fellow CBS students, going for the regulat 24 months will have the advantage of networking with MBB pretty much 3 months before they get to do interviews for internships. MBAs provide the benefit of offering very structured (and tedious) networking chances with all firms, something that cannot be undervalued. You will not be able to replicate that intense 3 months on your own since the firms and CBS invest a lot of resources there. However, you then must still leverage all assets at your disposal to start networking pretty much when you arrive on campus. Perhaps CBS allows you to participate in those events.

Hi there,

Internships are pretty important. The majority of MBB offers do come on the back of internships. That said, I do know people in my fulltime program that ends up getting offers in their 2nd year of recruiting.

Essentially, a 2-year program gives you two shots (with the first one being more effective).

Hey A!

Basically, the internship gives you the possibility to get into the field, build some useful relationship and practice your skills to see if you are a real deal. It's not an obligatory aspect for making the MBA, however, your internship experience might be quiet valuable while applying for a full-time job. Especially in your case, when you have none.

If you have any other question - write me a message!

Hey there,

You can do fine without a prior internship or converting an internship into a full-time offer! The MBA alone is enough.

You cannot change it based on what I read in your prompt. Hence, focus on a proper

  • networking
  • application and screening stage
  • aptitude test
  • case interviews and fit interviews

Apply to different firms to maximize your chances.

Fingers crossed!

Cheers,

Florian

Hello!

FIrst of all, people doing the J-term do get summer holidays, tht you could leverage for an intership.

Secondly, there are many intership opportunities during your MBA also.

Interships are important, but not that much! Many people even go thorugh recruiting again after the intership.

Feel free to PM me (MBA @ MIT, so familiar with CBS)

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

I know many people who did the J-term program at Columbia and I can tell you that it puts you at a severe disadvantage to your peers. An internship is critical to the offer process

  • Almost all interns get offers and only any remaining positions are filled by folks after that. These are largely positions others did not accept for some reason or another
  • It is not helpful to accept an offer without an internship so you can see if you are a good fit for the role or not. Every firm and every office is different
  • Internships are excellent interview practice for full time interviews

Definitely go to the normal MBA program if you have a choice
