For the Knowledge/research analyst roles at Mckinsey/BCG, Why is the interview format same as for a trad-consultant role

I am interviewing for research/knowledge analsyt roles at Mck and BCG. It's capabilities and Insights for Mck. At both firms, i was told i would go through 6 case interviews and PEI and isnt' going to be different than the normal format for the full consulting track. Why is this? I am not interviewing for a traditional consulting role. Why put me through the same interview process. Isn't there supposed to be a different format where they test niche skills because it is a capabilities/insights analyst or research/knowledge analyst role.

Really confused. I Didn't expect to prepare for rigorous traditional case interviews for this role

Hi there,

The short answer is that a Knowledge Analyst needs to have several traits similar to the ones of a traditional consultant. As a consequence, they will test you with a similar process.

Hi there,

The first answer I have is: Does it matter? That's the interview format that they've given you, so you should immediately stop wasting energy being frustrated with this and just carry on!

My second answer is: Preparing for these interviews is actually an incredible learning experience that develops and prepares you for many more things in life than just that interview itself (it prepares you for all future interviews, builds your business knowledge/acumen, teaches you to solve any problem that comes your way, etc. etc.)

Finally, my real answer would be that it's because they're trying to test if you're a suitable candidate! It takes a smart, capable, communicative individual to do well as a consultant at Mck/BCG, and it takes the same traits to do well as a knowledge/research analyst! You'll be evaluated on your problem solving, communication, brainstorming, etc. skills....which makes sense given the job you'll have to do!

Hi!

Agree with Francesco, the attitudes you look in both teams are very similar, why not leveraging the same process?

Think about it as a good thing, since there are many materials out there you can leverage!

Hope it helps! Cheers,

Clara
