Hi friends,

I have upcoming interview at Parthenon London office for TS&E (ops) team. It is 2.5 hour discussion (1 hour read/analyse, 30 min discussion, 1 hour normal interview). I recon that it would be M&A (Synergy identification) case.

Can somebody help me get more details around this case study like number of questions, ppt required or not, how much detail analysis is required, will typical MBB type problem solving structure will be required to use ? Will it involve Market sizing ? any other specific suggestions etc. ?

Hi there,

I know we already discussed this in the private messaging area, but I'll give the gist of it as other candidates may benefit from this (and can reach out for more details, particularly because this can be slightly different according to the very specific position one is applying to).

It works the following way: they give you a slide deck with a lot of details about the company (financials, clients, products, etc.), the market (market size, growth, segments, etc.), the competitors any other other relevant information. Not all of the information there is relevant, this is supposed to be an exhaustive deck. Of course, this is an example, as this depends on the specific topic they decide to test (if you are being hired as an expert, you may have a more “operational” case where you have to explain hwo you would do a transformation / integration).

You are given a question (just like in any other case interview) and then you have 30 mins to go through the information.

After that you present your recommendation, based on a structure with key messages and insights/facts that are based on the information you had. All of that will be probed by the interviewer. They will want to understand why you organized things the way you did and how you are supporting your recommendation, and also why you disregarded some facts.

Then it becomes just a regular case - they will come up with more questions - some they already had, some other that arise from the discussion. Can't know beforehand how many questions there will be but honestly it is not the most relevant thing.

So how do you prepare? Just like you would prepare for any other case interview.

On a personal note, given that I used to work for EY-Parthenon, I have been helping several candidates in preparing specifically for these types of interviews.

Hi Pooja,

First, good luck!

I recommend the following:

  1. Remember that most casing tips apply here (i.e. be very clear+focused on the objective, ruthlessly cut out information that doesn't help you meet this objective/question, make sure to thinking + communicate in a structured way, etc. etc.)
  2. Practice/simulate this as much as possible beforehand...getting a coach to help you run through scenarios + how to react in inevitably challenging moments will do a world of good.

I have a number of written case I'd be more than happy to share with you! What I generally do with my candidates is, give them a written case x hours before our scheduled session (adjust # of hours based on the specific interview they're going to have), and then review their work during the session (as well as talk through tips+tricks to get better).

Hello!

Unfortunately I don´t have 1st hand experience/info here. However, there are some coaches here that come from EY, why don´t you write them a PM and ask?

Cheers,

Clara

Hi!

For this specific case type, I recommend reading an M&A case on the LBS casebook. It is exactly about synergies identification.

Good luck,

Anto

Few things you might want to consider:

  • Do not pre-meditate the type of case and other stuff. The actual interview might surprise you and might put you at a weaker position that your capabilities.
  • Assume any kind of case and assume any & all case components (such as market sizing). Prepare for all and well. Most candidates over-prepare for one thing and get questions in the interview that they were under-prepared for.
  • Most casing tips around frameworks, structures, etc. will be applicable here as well since they are very broad-based. You needn't worry about any “parthenon-specific” style. Just give it your best shot.
