Deciding between offers?

Hi all,

I am trying to decide between 2 offers for strategy consulting roles. Would be interested in hearing your opinions.

Roles

1) Boutique strategy firm a leader in TMT advisory (high amount of PE work)

2) Accenture strategy fs

I have FS experience, and I am very passionate about technology and business strategy. I would like to experience a different industry other than banking but I am not 100% against it, e.g manufacturing, telecoms, technology and software.

My ambitions/exits strategy post are:

Most favourable
1) MBB

2) Transition into industry for a strategic role idealy some sort of business strategy role in Tech, FS or TMT industry; Samsung, Verizon, BT, VISA, Mastercard etc or PE/VC firm

Least favourable

3) MBA (Ideally Top 10 program)

If in doubt go for size of the firm, reputation first, i.e. I'd pick Accenture Strategy over any boutique. Make sure to start networking in the general direction of MBB as soon as you start working pretty much, prep the next professional step 1-2 years in advance to give you enough time to react.

Accenture is very good.

But based on your interview experience and research on both firms which one is a better fit? Make a choice based on the firm & role which is a better fit with your career aspirations, values and risk profile. Choices are never perfect as with every other event in life. So remove the pressure for finding something perfect. Focus on giving your best.

I have provided plenty of insights on Accenture vs other firms. So have a look at this thread and others mentioned: https://www.preplounge.com/en/consulting-forum/ey-parthenon-vs-accenture-9952

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the offers!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

I would highly advise you to opt for the option that better aligns with your professional (and maybe even personal) mid- to long-term goals. In order to make an informed decision, I would advise you to do the following:

  • Weigh the different criteria that are meaningful to you independently of the current options (e.g., prestige, culture, international exposure, compensation, location). After that, score the two options based on your criteria and their weighting, resulting in two scores. This way, you have covered the left-brain perspective.
  • Critically assess your initial reaction to the outcome of the scores. For instance, if you feel the urge to tweak the numbers, this is a solid indicator that you do not want this decision to become reality. This way, you have covered the right-brain perspective.
  • By doing so, you will be able to integrate both parts of the brain into the decision-making, guaranteeing a higher chance that you will still be happy with it years later.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to address your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hello!

Congrats, amazing job!

Honestly, and focusing my answer on the fact that long term you want to go to MBB, I would go for Accenture.

This said, there is no bad option here and any decision you make it going to be good.

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara
