Applying to Mck after Edad rejection

Hi,
Following up on my post below, I contacted HR and they said Solve will carry over for my internship since it stays for 12 months. That said, should I still apply for an Mck internship this summer or am I wasting my time? Or should I wait and apply for full time instead? And if I apply for an internship and get rejected, would I be banned from applying for full time?

Thanks.

Previous Post:

Hi,
I got rejected from McKinsey Edad despite coming from a top global target school with high gpa and strong leadership. I think I messed up the solve game slightly since my ecosystem didn’t work out at the end, but I did decent on redrock and very good on the sea wolf game. Was I rejected because of Solve? And if so, will my score hold since I’m applying for summer internships this upcoming summer?

Thanks for the follow-up and great that you clarified with HR.

Here’s how to think about your next steps:

1. Should you apply for the McKinsey internship?

Yes, if you're eligible, it’s still worth applying. Even with a previous rejection, strong candidates often succeed in later cycles, especially with improved prep. Your Solve score will carry over, but your overall application and interview performance are what matter most.

2. Is it better to wait for full-time?

Not necessarily. Getting into the internship can give you a faster route to a full-time offer. If you wait, you’ll face even more competition and potentially fewer openings depending on hiring needs.

3. Will a rejection for the internship block you from full-time?

No, you won’t be banned. McKinsey allows reapplication — typically after a 6–12 month wait. A rejection won’t hurt your full-time chances if you improve your application and show growth.

Bottom line: Apply for the internship. You have nothing to lose and potentially a great opportunity to gain. If it doesn’t work out, you can still go for full-time with a stronger application and learnings from this round.

Let me know if you’d like help refining your story or prepping more strategically this time.

Should you apply for the internship this summer?

Absolutely. Applying now won’t negatively impact your chances for a full-time role later on. In fact, applying for an internship can increase your exposure to McKinsey and gives you another opportunity to engage with the recruiting team.

If you apply for the internship and get rejected, would you be banned from applying for a full-time role later?

Typically, a rejection means you’d have a 12–18 month waiting period before reapplying, though this can vary slightly by office. Since you’re already considering a full-time position, this risk is worth taking because a successful internship application can give you a direct pathway to a full-time role.

Given your strong profile (top global target school, high GPA, and leadership), you should maximize your chances by securing a referral, polishing your resume, and thoroughly preparing for interviews.

Feel free to reach out directly if you want support with interview preparation or crafting a compelling application.

Best,

Alberto

Hello there,

Do you know why you’ve got rejected after all? If it was mainly because of your SOLVE score, you’ll probably be rejected again, specially if your resume still the same. I would encourage you to try again, since you have nothing to lose (you won’t be banned, just cooled off for 6-12 months), but pay attention to your overall application and try to enhance your CV by exposing yourself to new challenges worth mentioning in it if possible. Considering the test score will remain the same, that’s the only thing you have control over. Happy to chat if you would like professional guidance on how to craft a stronger resume.

Good luck, keep on moving, successful candidates are made out of hard work and perseverance :-) you’ve got this!

Best,

Mari

Hi there!

If you get rejected, even for an internship, you then need to wait for a year for the freeze period to end.

If you have any doubts about your eligibility, discuss it with the recruiter. They sometimes make exceptions with the timeline if they feel the candidate has made significant progress in terms of their background and preparation.

Best,
Cristian
