What is the best option to have on your CV if I want to apply for an MBB?

Hello!

I am currently working in a Big Four in consulting specializing in operations and processes for legal teams (Legal Operations Services). However, I would like in the short term to transition to strategic consulting at an MBB. Also, I have an offer to join as a consultant in Business & Operations in a Start-Up Proptech that is in Series B.

In order to make the transition, is it better for my CV to have the Start-Up experience or is it better to apply from where I am?

(I graduated last year from Industrial Engineering -Cum Laude Top 3%, and I am finishing my Masters in Industrial Engineering).

Thank you in advance for your advice!

Hi there,

It depends on the exact activities you would do in each job

Just from what you mentioned, the startup may offer more opportunities to do strategy-related activities, as the focus of your current job in legal seems very niche. You may also verify that by looking at how many people moved from your current job to MBB via LinkedIn.

On the other hand, you said that you would like to transition short-term. Therefore I guess the best strategy to follow to move to MBB would be to:

  1. Apply now to MBB (this will also validate if your current job is a good fit for a transition)
  2. If you don’t get an offer, move to the startup, apply again in 1-2 years (as mentioned, do your due diligence on what exactly you would do there to verify it is better than your current option)
  3. If you still don’t get in, do a 1-year MBA and apply again

Finally, be sure to choose a job that you like rather than just consider what it could lead to as next steps. Even in case the startup is better in terms of exits, there is no reason to join and work there for a few years if you would not like the job.

Best,

Francesco

Hi there!

I can guess who this is :)

Just for other viewers I'll repeat the gist of my response which is that I think both are reasonable and could lead to a strong resume. Importantly, both should present opportunities to do consulting-related work which both seem to do. At the end of the day, how well you do in each and how well you rise up may matter most, as does your happiness (work enjoyment) over the next 2-3 years :)

Good luck with the decision!

Hello!

There are multiple valid paths to MBB, so there are several ways in which you can make it work (and the two that you mention indeed are strong paths).

In any case, if the target is MBB and you don´t have a special interest in the startup per-se, you can apply now (knowing that, if it goes wrong, you can work a couple of years -or less- in the startup and re-apply).

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

There is no ‘right’ answer for what you should be doing. However, I personally think the BizOps at a startup might be something better if you own a lot of initiatives and can talk about it in detail in your MBB interviews. The issue with legal ops is that it is super specific and also not viewed very highly for strategy roles.
