This is a tricky question to answer at a country level but potentially makes more sense at a specific office level. However, as you network or speak to people of different offices, below are some of the things to look for

  • Size of office
  • Industries that the office serves
  • Is there a lot of travel work
  • Demand in the office (Impacts your ability for short-term mobility options if there is a 1-to-1 swap)
  • Salaries are different
  • Sometimes offices can have differences in progression
  • Microcultures within the office
  • Number of locals vs internationals
  • Expected hours works

Speak to people from the offices you are gunning for to get a better sense of these things to get a deeper sense of what is going on.

Great question to ask while networking!

Can you clarify what role you'd be going into, what specific offices you're interested in and what factors you care about? Ultimately, most of the differences are going to be in a) type of work/projects b) salary/compensation c) career progression d) work-life balance and e) culture

But Atlanta is very different to New York is very different to Houston…

Hey there,

The culture, type of projects and industries as well as the career progression will differ from office to office. At a country level, the most dominant differences will be the culture, the language (e.g., if you're in Montreal) and the salary.

US vs. Canada? Not a great deal of difference.

A specific office in Canada vs. a specific office in the US? A lot of difference.

Usually a big difference is in compensation between USA and Canada. The US salaries are usually higher and the currency is stronger (in relative comparison). This is especially significant if you need to pay off student loans somewhere.

Other than that, there could be differences in client base, industry focus areas and preferred project types between the offices. But that goes for both, domestic and international offices

In my opinion

Advantages of Canada

  • MUCH simpler immigration process and painless visa process in comparison to the US
  • Ability to work on projects in the US if you want to
  • Smaller class size - better ability to meet more people and network with senior leaders

Advantages of US

  • It is the largest economy - Canada does not come close in terms of breadth of opportunities across all industries that the US offers. In any region of the US you have 10x the opportunity of Canada
  • Bigger class size - great network overall and you will always find a group of people where you belong
  • Pay - US pays a lot more in the long run
  • Much better exit options - again the breadth of options is unmatched compared to Canada

As pointed out - the US is very regional and you cannot compare all of the US to Canada so every region had its nuance but overall I think the points apply.
