Reach out to McKinsey interviewer

Hi guys,

I'm having a phone screening round with McKinsey (10 mins FIT + 30 mins case). They provided the interviewer's information and Linkedin account. Should I reach out to him to greet him before the interview?

Thanks!!

Hey there,

I would not do that before the interview.

  1. They get your resume anyway and see who you are beforehand. No need to show your LinkedIn
  2. It would not have any impact on your fit and case performance and evaluation, even if it is meant well

I'd rather send them a connection request after the interview, thanking them for their time. Again, this would not have any impact on the evaluation but is a nice touch and way to increase the size of your network.

Read more about the McKinsey Fit and Case before going there. :-)

All the best with your interviews!

Cheers,

Florian

Hi there,

Don’t do it. If anything, it’s creating a bit of an awkward situation since she/he will try and avoid any contact beforehand to remain unbiased.

I had people reach out to me in this way when I was a McKinsey interviewer. I didn’t mind at all and I get why people do it but I always waited with a response until after the interview.

Best of luck!

Hi there,

Q: Should I reach out to him to greet him before the interview?

I would avoid it. There is no advantage and as mentioned by the other coaches it may look strange to the interviewer.

It is totally fine though to:

  • Look at the profile and use the information there to ask better questions at the end, after the case interview and
  • Send a thank you email after the interview

Best,

Francesco

No, you should not do that. There's no upside, but clearly a potential downside. It will feel like you are trying to pass the interview by creating a connection with the interviewer, and it will backfire.

Hello,

Congratulations on your interview! No need to reach out to him beforehand, but I would recommend reading through his LinkedIn profile to get a sense of his background and interests. They will not necessarily be reflected in the case topic, but may help you in building a rapport / having a conversation with him if there is an opportunity to do so. After the interview, be sure to follow up with a polite thank you email.

Hi there,

Not necessary and if anything it shows that you are overly-keen. Just focus on doing well in the interview and then feel free to add them to your network afterwards.

Best,

Cristian

No - do not do that. The interviewer is not trying to be your friend or mentor, their entire role is to interview you for 30 mins. In addition, many of them would not want someone they interviewed to reach out to them to ask for feedback or discuss they case afterwards so they are not likely to accept the request either way.
