Re-application Timeline for South East Asia Office

Hi, I would like to know if the standard application timeline of 12-24 months also applies to the offices in South East Asia. I am considering reapplying to McKinsey. If anyone has any knowledge or personal experience regarding the reapplication process for McKinsey offices in South East Asia, I would greatly appreciate your input.

Thanks

Hi Nor,

First of all, I am sorry to hear about the rejection from McKinsey.

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, the standard re-application timeline of 12-18 months typically applies globally, including South East Asia offices. However, these timelines can sometimes be flexible based on your specific situation. Factors such as significant improvements in your qualifications or experiences may allow for an earlier re-application.
  • Moreover, I would advise you to directly contact the recruiting department of the McKinsey office you are interested in to clarify the re-application guidelines. The reapplication policies might have slight differences among offices or even change over time, so direct communication is always a good approach.
  • Lastly, use this time to reflect on your previous application process and to further improve, especially on any weak spots that you might have gotten feedback on. It could also be beneficial to get support from an experienced coach to ensure that you maximize your potential.

You can find more on this topic here: How to deal with a rejection from a consulting company.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to address your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi Hagen,

Thanks for your response and valuable insights. I reached out to the HR department at McKinsey regarding the re-application guidelines. However, it has been two weeks, and I haven't received any reply from them yet. I guess I'll just have to wait for another month to re-apply.

Hi Nor, of course, I am always available to help. Thank you for the update on your situation. Have you reached out to them by e-mail or telephone? If you have chosen e-mail, it could be beneficial to try a telephone call after a week, as this can potentially lead to a more prompt reply. You mentioned about an additional month before re-applying - can you elaborate on the duration that has already passed?

I received an email rejection after completing the McKinsey Problem Solving Game in early September 2022 for the associate position. I believe my lack of preparation might have contributed to the outcome.

In that case, I agree that waiting for one more month may be sufficient - as long as you made sure that there is some progress visible on your resume as well.

Hi there,

Yes, the typical 12-month timeline is across all offices.

It's not a hard timeline though (i.e., you don't need exactly 12 months), you just need to prove that you've elevated your profile in the meantime.

And by all means, make sure that you apply broadly. The market is rather tough at the moment, so it's best to diversify your risk as much as you can:

Best,
Cristian

Hi Nor,

Q: I would like to know if the standard application timeline of 12-24 months also applies to the offices in South East Asia.

This is indeed the standard worldwide unless the mentioned a shorter period in the rejection email/call.

Good luck!

Francesco

Hello,

12 months is the standard ban period. I would check with HR in the office you want to reapply to to see their specific policy.

Hi Sofia,

Thanks for your response. I sent an email to the HR department in my home country regarding the re-application guidelines two weeks ago. Unfortunately, I haven't received any response from them yet. Also, I tried reaching out to a recruiter based in my office country through LinkedIn, but I haven't received a reply as of now. I guess I'll wait for another month to re-apply.

The purpose of the timeline is to give candidates sufficient time to build on their experience so that you have more to draw upon for the next round of interviews. There needs to be significant and real change for them to re-consider you.

This applies to all McKinsey offices globally so yes it also applies to SE Asia.

The best thing to do is to wait at least one full year before applying if not 2 years and to be able demonstrate clearly why you are now a better candidate than last time. Also only apply with a referral this time around to have a good shot at receiving an invite to interview.
