Question about a firm

Hi there!

I'm a senior student in America who recently received an offer from Teneo Consulting. The interview was hard and the pay seems decent. I wonder if anyone is familiar with the consultancy? I know it's more famous in the UK but how good is it in the US? It seems like a boutique firm so there's not much I can find online. Thanks!

Best,

Hi there,

It sounds familiar, but only vaguely. However, that doesn't mean that it's not a nice place to work at.

Many boutique firms are started by ex-Partners from the bigger firms so check who is currently leading the organisation to get an idea of their working culture. Also get an understanding of how many employees they have, how many offices and where they specialise in any particular industry. Lastly, I would also try to reach out to a few of the current employees to get a more humane understanding of the firm and whether it's the right place for you.

Best,

Cristian

As a benchmark, never have I seen them in any engagement or proposal in 11 years across projects in Italy, Germany, Greece, Israel, the UK, Azerbaijan, and Ireland.

Have not really heard about Teneo here. However, if you like the team and the work there is not much to very about.

At the end of the day, brand name does impact exit options. Typically, for boutique firms, you are most likely to be hired by people familiar with the work they do. As long as they work in sectors and with clients you may want to work with in the long run this should not really impact anything.

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the offer!

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for a lot of users, thus I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • Teneo Consulting is a global management consulting firm that was founded in 2011 and is headquartered in New York City. The company has a strong presence in the United States and has offices in several major cities across the country, including Washington D.C., Los Angeles, and Chicago.
  • As a boutique consulting firm, Teneo focuses on providing strategic advice and guidance to a select group of clients in the corporate, government, and nonprofit sectors. The company has a reputation for offering high-quality, customized consulting services to its clients and has a team of experienced consultants with expertise in a wide range of industries and disciplines.
  • Overall, Teneo Consulting has a strong reputation in the consulting industry and is known for its commitment to delivering high-quality, impactful work for its clients. I would advise you to take the offer quite seriously, especially given there was an initial motivation to apply from your side (I suppose).

Hello,

No, unfortunately, I haven't heard of it. But just because it's not popular, doesn't mean it is not worth working there!

There are several pros of working in a smaller firm:

1) More intimate team setting - if you like to be close to people who you work with, then this is certainly more advantageous than a bigger firm

2) Faster promotions - You can get promoted perhaps every year at a smaller firm and this can significantly help your learning and benefit you financially as well

3) Learning curve - You will be expected to do a wider role than what you would be doing in a larger company. For example: you maybe even responsible for staffing, billings, collections from client on top of your client delivery - this would really help if you plan to stay in the long run and become a partner

All the best!

I'd encourage you to get in touch with HR and ask them to put you in touch with some senior people in Teneo US. I think this is the best way to learn more about a company you received an offer from, especially as you can ask them about real-life project experience

I've never come across them - neither in Europe nor USA.

How come you interviewed with them already and received an offer but you don't know anything about the firm? What did you tell them in the interviews as to why you wanted to join the firm? Was there no chance to ask questions during the interviews? Did you apply directly or through some headhunter?

Here's the thing - I generally know the firm, I know it was founded by one of Clinton's advisors in 2012 and had been growing since then. It's more established in the UK because it bought Deloitte's restructuring team and a few other strategy consultancies. I generally know it has a few big clients such as Dow Chemical, Coca-Cola, UBS, etc. I didn't really have a chance to ask the interviewers since the cases were really intense, plus I was interviewing for a group that is already established in the UK but just started up in the US - so all my interviewers are based in the UK, and are planning to move to the US in the next year. I'm not worried about the pay or the company's potential, I was just expecting to learn about its reputation in the US since it's related to the potential exit opportunity.

Hi there,

I've never heard of them.

That said, never underestimate the power of an awesome “small” firm. Out of school, I joined a no-name company called Appian instead of working at the US Federal Reserve. This is because it seemed to be a great company with a lot of potential. (For them and me with them).

Turned out to be the best job I've ever had.

Hi there,

I have never heard about them or come across them.

I would look into their leadership team to understand if they are potentially ex-MBB partners (which is often the case with these smaller firms).

On top of that, I would reach out and discuss with current employees to understand more about their line of work, type of engagements, culture, etc.

Cheers,

Florian

There are good boutiques that 99% of people never heard about. So you need to do your research. Look at their website, look at current and former employees at Linkedin, look into glassdoor, etc.

Ultimately, you can reach out to a former employee on Linkedin to see if they can help you better understand the company (but notice they have a vested interest in saying good things about their former company).
