Quant Test BCG Interview

Hello,

I'm just did my second last of interviews for a Senior Analyst role in O&G. I think qualitatively/behaviorally, it's been going great, I really vibed with most of the interviewers. However, when I get asked a quantitative questions, i.e., profitability/EBIDTA/etc., it catches me off-guard as these aren't things I deal with on a day to day basis, hence, I don't think I've been performing to my top 100% in that area. The hiring manager has, reached out me saying they'd like to test me on quants while making sure I am fully briefed on what to expect, how to solve consulting problems, etc.

1. Has anyone ever been in this position, if yes, what was the process like, and what should I be expecting in terms of the questions, it seems to me like a case interview type deal.

2. My background has primarily been very science/technical based, so what are the best resources I can use to crash course on, what type of questions should I be focusing on. I reckon I only have a few days before this test.

Thanks all!

Basically you are lacking basic business (terminology and concepts) knowledge. Going through preplounge resources section can help, just beware that they are more looking for financial concepts (not the "3C", "4P" of "5-Forces" style of frameworks... you can ignore those).

You CAN make it! | xMckinsey | 1.5h session | +200 sessions |Free 20-Minute Call

Hi there,

Based on what you have written, it does seem to be a case interview related to business math concepts. Worthy to know the most common types, also what composes a balance sheet, specially of the O&G industry.

If you think you really lack math expertise for case interview in general, feel free to DM for some good free resources.

Good luck!

Best,

Mari

Bain | Free 15-min intro call | Former recruiting team | BCG, Kearney, Mastercard Advisors Offer Holder

1. On the first question, it does seem like a case interview which is heavy on financial concepts. This is not uncommon and is done at Bain as well when a candidate has gone through all the rounds and we think they would benefit from an extra interview to test their quant.

2. Try googling for “26 Case Interview Formulas You Absolutely Need to Know” by Hacking the Case Interview and scroll to the accounting, finance and economics section. Also see if you can find an example of an actual case interview that focuses on income statement and balance sheet to see how the concepts are put into practice.

Hope this helps! All the best
