Oliver Wyman Energy & Natural Resources

Hello everyone,

I have an upcoming first round interview with OW and the person who will be doing my interview is in the Energy & Natural Resources Industry. Does that mean my case will highly likely be from that industry? What should I be aware of?

Apart from being part of a global consulting firm and the culture of OW. What are other reasons for why OW? I want to sound unique and for Why Consulting? Can I say that being able to work directly with client and be able to see the lasting impact on the firm whilst we accompany them is why I would like to be work in Consulting.

Any additional tips and advice in regards to Energy & Natural Resources Case or Oliver Wyman itself would be highly appreciated. Thank you

Hi there,

Congrats to making it to first round!

Agree with Christian here - likelyhood that you will get an energy case is indeed higher, but don't get too fixated on that. Prepare like you would when you know know nothing about your interviewer.

Now on the question WHY OW? The company is known for quite a few things, such as…

  • Faster and more flexible career progression than MBB
  • Quite casual, informal culture (varies by office ofc)
  • Good comp on starting levels
  • Strong position in certain industries (e.g. Financial Services)

That said, above are known elements that many candidates will use in their pitch. Suggest you actually reflect on why you actually applied for the role and why you think you would enjoy it? It typically boils down to the people from the firm you know and how you well you associate with them. Whatever it is and whether or not it overlaps with above factors - make sure you give a genuine answer.

Wish you all the best!

Regards, Andi

Hi there,

Please don't “narrow” down the scope of the interview!

It's very important that you come in prepared for any case type! It's worthwhile to do some additional review in the areas that your interviewers work, but be ready for anything!

In regards to OW, you don't need to be off the charts unique. Pull from what they say on their website, what you've learned through networking, and be genuine in your answer.

Good luck!

Hi there,

With regards to your questions:

  • Case: You may or may not get an energy related case. This is neither predictable, nor relevant. Unless you apply for a very specific role with a target industry, you will be assessed as a generalist who can deal with any problem.
  • Why OW: Your goal shouldn't be to sound unique. It's perfectly fine to give an answer that they heard many times before, if it's something they like to hear. If you can identify with the culture, like their client list, firm footprint, focus areas, etc. than say that. Don't overcomplicated.
  • Why Consulting: Sure, go with that. It's certainly not a unique answer (to your point about trying to be unique) but it doesn't have to be because it's honest and perfectly reasonable. Just make sure to put some more flesh on the bone and you'll be fine.

Hope this helps a bit! Best of luck!

Hi there,

No, it doesn't necessarily mean that the case will be from from Energy & Natural resources, though it's very likely that it will. Interviewers often choose topics they are comfortable with, rather than something that is also totally new to them.

In terms of why OW, it's always good to have had contact with someone from OW already and to claim that what they said about the firm really set them apart.

Agree with other coaches. Please dont assume that case will be from a particular sector. Prepare well and be ready for anything that may come your way.
