No Feedback After Rejection - Advice

Just wrapped up the interview process w/ McK for an BA role in a specific practice. Got to the first round, but no further - which happens. Not everyone can get every job. 

The issue that I'm currently facing is that the recruiter I was working with didn't give me much feedback for how to improve. He just said my knowledge/skills weren't what the team was looking for. After all the stellar things I've heard about the McK process and team, I'm a bit surprised/shocked at the lack of feedback and communication, especially considering it took him +2 weeks to get back to me regarding the results of the interview. 

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to solicit feedback from McK to improve my performance? Would emailing the interviewers a thank you and asking for feedback be appropriate? They all told me I did well during the interview, but clearly there is some area that I need to improve in as a candidate.

Hi there, 

sorry to hear you didnt pass. You are right on getting your feedback. I would recommend to reach back and in assertive way still solicit full feedback from the interviewer. I would be clear, you want to improve and eventually try it again and with the feedback they had gave you, you wont be able progress.

Hi there,

I love your attitude! “which happens - not everyone can get the job”.

This is in quite strong contrast to most candidates…keep that attitude up and you'll go places :)

You're not going to be able to really solicit feedback. Even if you do succeed, it's going to be quite generic and unhelpful. You can email them, but don't expect much!

If you did not even pass the 1st round, there are going to be multiple/significant issues.

If you truly want to know where you're lacking and what you need to do to improve, you should hire a coach. They can give you a detailed assessment and set you on the path to success (much like a personal gym/exercise trainer might do).

Hi, 

I love your positive attitude. Lack of explicit feedback is disappointing but interviewers also have their strenuous day jobs at McK and sometimes they are overwhelmed. You should try to email them to ask for specific feedback and express that it will help you chart your future career goals (become better at problem solving and try again or explore other opportunities which are better fit for my skills) 

Incase you plan to apply to other consulting companies or try for McK at a later stage would be good to hire a coach who can give a unbiased opinion after assessing  your performance.

Sorry to hear about that. Indeed usually McK is very careful with how they handle the process. 

If you remember the name of the people who interviewed you, I would follow up in their company email (name_surname@mck) or in Linkedin. You should explain how eager you are to get better and go back to the game with a stronger hand, and this would be appealing to them.

Good for you for chasing feedback! McKinsey has a very strong feedback culture and should welcome your enquiry.

If HR don't have much to say, push them in the most friendly way to either reach out to the interviewer consultants and/or reach out directly to them (linkedin/email).

You have noting to loose and everything to gain!

It's a huge shame but unfortunately the recruiter is often not well placed to share the feedback.  You're also right that the McKinsey feedback reputation works when the process is more consultant-led where the interviewer makes the turn down call with feedback.  Assuming you had a good connection with your interviewers, I would reach out to them by email/linkedin and see what happens as well.

Surely reach out to interviewers. They should be happy to share feedback on case performance. 
 

I’m hearing more and more about negative experiences recruiting at McKinsey recently. I think the recruiters are just overwhelmed right now. A recruiting manager would definitely be interested in hearing this, but probably best to keep this to yourself if you want reapply.
