Hi!

I am experienced candidate. Should I network with associate/engagement level people or Partner level to get referalls and interview?

Hi,

I would go for the middle of the pyramid rather than Partners, so Associates and Engagement Managers at McKinsey, Consultants and Project Leaders at BCG. Partners are usually too senior to engage with a candidate they do not know, and very junior contacts are too green to carry weight internally. Standing inside the office counts too, so who the person is matters as much as the title.

As an experienced candidate there is one thing to add, the more senior the role you are targeting, the more the affiliation to a practice weighs, so try to reach people sitting in the practice you are applying to.

Whoever you pick, do not ask for the referral in the first conversation; you start by asking for advice or an opinion on your CV and you move forward step by step, each time asking for the smallest commitment you can.

If you want a pair of external eyes on your specific situation and more tailor made suggestions, feel free to write to me.

Best,

Franco
