McKinsey 'see you later' question

Hello, I received a ‘see you later’ following first round interview. At the time they told me my PEIs were good. Is it ok to re-use the same PEIs in the new application first round interview (6 months later)? Only a limited number of stories exist involving conflicts etc!

I am wondering if they keep recordings of the first interviews and refer back to them following the ‘see you later’ period.

Thank you!

Hi there,

if you mean the 12-18 months ban period by “see you later”, then you should not apply before that time is up. It will also be expected that your CV has evolved with relevant experiences during that time in order for you to get invited to interviews again.

I would predominantly focus on the areas that were ‘not good enough’ to pass your initial interviews when you prepare for another attempt. If you received positive feedback on your PEI, then there is no immediate need to revamp that.

However, you will have different interviewers next time around (in all likelihood) anyway. Companies also try to keep interviewers unbiased going into the conversation. So I highly doubt that any recordings of your stories exist that will be distributed to future interviewers.

Best of luck

Yes, I wanted to check if the interviewers have notes/recordings going into the interview, so that clears it up. Thank you!

Hi there,

I'm really confused…

Are you currently interviewing? If so, “see you later” don't mean anything. You may or may not get to the next round.

If you are re-applying after 6 months because they did not pass you on the interview, then you need to wait. You should wait 12 months unless they explicitly said to re-apply after x months and you've reached out to them now to confirm.

If that is indeed the case, sure you “can” use the same PEI…but if you failed to pass the 1st time around, maybe you should re-evalute? Get a professional coach to tell you if they're good enough, because you're assuming they're good when the evidence suggests they weren't good enough…

Hi there,

If they explicitly confirmed all the stories were good and you don’t have other good stories, it is fine to use them again – there is no reason to use weaker stories in that case. However, please note that it is good practice to have 2 stories per dimension, so that you can have a backup if they don’t like the headline of the story for whatever reason.

If you are not sure if all the stories were good, I would double-check those for which you have doubts and if needed write new ones.

Good luck!

Hi there,

No, they don't keep such recordings. No worries - you can use the same stories.

However, I would focus if I were you on improving on the feedback they provided after turning you down the last time. What were the development areas they highlighted? How are you planning on working on them? This is one of the places where a coach can add a lot of value.

Best of luck with the prep!

Sure, you can use them. However, it is important how you tell your story and what aspects you emphasize. Let me know in case I can be of help.

Hello,

It's ok to use the same stories, especially if you were told that your PEIs were good. But I would nonetheless recommend taking some time to work on polishing them more or coming up with new examples, if you are able to. It's always better to have more (good!) stories, if you can.
