Hello everyone,
I was rejected after taking McKinsey PSG (I had passed the CV screening) 11 months ago. Position - Private Equity practice.
I have spoken to HR and she told me that I can reapply now. I would like to apply for the generalist position now and do not want to apply for private equity practice anymore.
For the context of the question - I do not have any brand names on my CV but have made an impact in my current firm which is why I had passed the CV screening earlier.
Questions:
1 - Is the bar the same for both the Generalist position and PEPI practice? I have heard that you need to have brand names if you are applying for a generalist position.
2 - Can I apply with the same CV? I have done many changes to my CV. I have just replaced one bullet in my current work experience.
3 - If one has passed the CV screening earlier, does it mean that he/she will pass again or you can still get rejected at the CV screening stage even if you have passed earlier.
Mckinsey screening and reapply

Hi there,
1 - Is the bar the same for both the Generalist position and PEPI practice? I have heard that you need to have brand names if you are applying for a generalist position.
In general, you cannot define one of the options easier and brand names help in both cases. However it also depends on demand and supply for the specific position. I would expect lower demand for PEPI (you normally need to have some domain expertise compared to a generalist position) but also lower supply (fewer slots available compared to generalist) so it is difficult to say unless you have insider information for that office and practice
2 - Can I apply with the same CV? I have done many changes to my CV. I have just replaced one bullet in my current work experience.
You should show some improvements compared to the last application, reflecting your growth in the last year.
3 - If one has passed the CV screening earlier, does it mean that he/she will pass again or you can still get rejected at the CV screening stage even if you have passed earlier.
You can still be rejected at CV screening. Would make sense to apply via referral if possible. You can find more here:

Hi there,
First of all, good luck in your 2nd attempt!
1 - Is the bar the same for both the Generalist position and PEPI practice? I have heard that you need to have brand names if you are applying for a generalist position.
Regardless of the answer (which is, it depends), it doesn't matter. Have the best resume you can. Period!
2 - Can I apply with the same CV? I have done many changes to my CV. I have just replaced one bullet in my current work experience.
Yes, but no. You can do whatever you like. But you should tailor it as much as possible to optimize your chances of success
3 - If one has passed the CV screening earlier, does it mean that he/she will pass again or you can still get rejected at the CV screening stage even if you have passed earlier.
No, it is not guaranteed that they will pass again. You need to treat every application as its own. So, have as strong a resume as you can and make sure to network extensively beforehand.

Hey there,
To go straight to your questions:
1. The bar should be generally the same for both roles.
2. You should definitely showcase significant changes in your resume since your last application. Such changes can be in terms of
- New work experience / role
- New academic experience or achievement
- New extracurricular activities
- Experience abroad
3. Its a new screening process and you should show some progress on your resume
Cheers,
Florian

Answers
1. Bar is generally the same, but yes it is lower for particular practices because your experience counts for a lot more here vs the school you went to or brand name of current employer etc.
2. Yes you can, but I would suggest you ask coaches or someone at McKinsey for feedback
3. There is no such guarantee. To maximize your chances, always apply with a referral.

1 - Is the bar the same for both the Generalist position and PEPI practice?
The bar should be similar. Of course, the applicant pool can be different, and increase or lower your changes, but I don't think they are looking for significantly different attributes.
2 - Can I apply with the same CV?
If one year has passed and your CV hasn't improved accordingly, that is a red flag. Your CV should reflect your grown. You should have something new in there.
3 - If one has passed the CV screening earlier, does it mean that he/she will pass again?
There's a good chance you will pass again. But this isn't a guarantee. More candidates applying, less openings, a CV that may be perceived as less interesting after one additional year, or simply a different screener, all of those mean you may get rejected this time.
