Mckinsey interview without conclusion part

Is it normal to do a McKinsey interview first round without conclusion?

I was doing an interview and we ran out of time, so the interviewer said okay and we swiftly moved on. Tbf, I did not fully understand first question so my answer was wack and I tried to redeem myself and it took a lot of time.  But my other interview went very well.

Hi there,

That is one of the most surprising elements of the interviewer-led format of McKinsey; there is no conclusion or recommendation.

Once the interviewer has collected enough data and observations on your performance in different areas, the case just ends. Completely normal. :-)

I remember very well how puzzled I was during my interviews as a candidate…

Cheers,

A case might have one or two additional questions to “conclude” it but depending how the interview goes and how much time it takes the candidate to get there, it might not always get asked.

The interviewer might have already seen enough of the case performance then to form an opinion and might want to use the remaining minutes for other topics such as Q&A.

All the best and hope you get to advance

Hi there,

Yes, it's perfectly normal.

Usually you get asked about 3-4 questions during the course of a regular interview. You almost always have a structuring/framework question and a calculation question. More often than not you also have chart interpretation and perhaps a brainstorming question (which is also basically a structuring question). Then some interviewers also give you the opportunity to synthesise all of this in a recommendation for the client.

However, not all interviewers ask for it and you shouldn't read too much into this.

Best,

Cristian

Hello,

Don't worry about it - different cases have different structures, and the McKinsey cases don't have a recommendation/conclusion section a lot of the time. It can also happen that you run out of time solving a case, and that's totally fine provided your performance was good on the parts that you did solve! The interviewers just have to stick to the timeline.

Hi there,

Yes, completely normal! This is generally how McK interviews work.

Please make sure you fully understand the questions! Ask clarifying questions to make sure you're clear! “Wack” answers are not what we want :)

That's common in Mckinsey interviews, and I perfectly understand why you get the feeling of it being a bit weird - because it is weird, it is not how a normal interaction would go in that regard. But… it is that way by design, so you should not overstress about it.

Very normal - there is no official conclusion question and is often asked just to make it feel like the interview is ‘concluded’. Don’t worry about it!
