Mckinsey Background Check Information

Hello,

So I want to know what the McKinsey recruitment process looks like. After passing the CV screening and game stage, and before the interview stage, how do they do the background check for a potential candidate? Do they call the companies to verify employment, or do they verify it directly with the candidate? And how rigorous is the background check? Please guide me on it in detail.

Hi,

Nothing happens before the interviews. The background check comes after you receive an offer, not between the game and R1. The firm has no reason to spend money verifying candidates who may not get through.

Once you have an offer, it's outsourced to a third party. Sometimes (but not always) they contact your employers' HR departments directly to confirm titles and dates, verify your degree with the university... They don't call your old manager for an opinion; it's a factual verification, not a reference check.

Hope it helps,
Franco

I don't know specifically how McKinsey handles background checks, so I don't want to give you information I'm not sure about. But I can tell you how it works in large multinational companies, and I would expect the process to be broadly similar.

Typically, the background check is outsourced to a third-party company. They verify the information you provided directly with previous employers and, if they find any discrepancies, they contact you for clarification or supporting documents.

Just to give you an idea of the level of detail: in 2024 I went through a background check where the external company asked me why my CV said I had started working at Simon-Kucher in 2011, while their verification showed June 2012. The reason was simply that I had started there as an intern before becoming a full-time employee. I explained it, but I still had to find and send them my internship contract from around 14 years earlier to make sure they didn't report it as a "yellow flag."

So these checks can be surprisingly detailed.

I don't know whether McKinsey follows exactly the same process or at what stage they conduct it, but my advice is simple: be very precise with dates, job titles, degrees and anything else you put on your CV. Small genuine discrepancies can normally be explained, but it's much better to make sure the information is accurate from the beginning.

Hi,

There is no background check between the assessment and the interviews. McKinsey only runs it once you have actually received an offer, since there is no reason to verify candidates who may not get through.

At that point it is handled by an external screening company, not McKinsey directly, and it is a factual check: employment dates and titles, your degree, sometimes ID or criminal records depending on the country.

Hope it helps and good luck with the process!
