MBB in the Nordics vs. DACH region

Hi everyone,

I have recently gotten an internship at one of the MBB firms in the Nordics and will be starting in the summer. I am originally from Germany and also have a full-time offer at another MBB firm there, with a start next fall. Since it might happen that I will get a return offer from the firm in the Nordics after my internship and I would then need to decide where I see myself more long-term, I am now wondering about the differences in consulting (and especially at MBB) between the Nordics and the DACH region.

I am especially interested in the differences in:

- working hours and firm/office cultures

- compensation (I have not gotten info on my internship remuneration yet)

- prestige between the different MBB firms in the two regions and

- exit opportunities.

I would be super interested in hearing your insights!

Thanks a lot,

H

Hello H,

congrats on your internship!

- working hours and firm/office cultures → there may be little difference between the cultures as in any other work, but working hours as well as office culture is very similar between different offices in MBB, particularly considering it is the same region (Europe)

- compensation (I have not gotten info on my internship remuneration yet) → there are regional differences between compensations depending on the cost of living and competition that MBB has. You can find salaries for each country on Glassdoor for example.

- prestige between the different MBB firms in the two regions → no difference top consulting firms are equally prestigious

- exit opportunities → Having in your CV MBB experience gives you greater chance to secure more prosperous job later, but it is not the only thing that counts, your ability to look for a job and network, prepare winning CV and cover letter and then tackle the interview are even more important. MBB offers career transition service (= they can secure you a job) for their leaving consulting team (not for visiting).

I wish you all the best in that experience and if you like it, wishing you success in securing the permanent offer!

Hi,

congrats to the offer / internship!

My general advice would be to not focus too much on those details like (small) salary differences or slightly different prestige but rather decide this based on where you want to live in the next years.

Take also into account that you can be staffed in DACH working for a MBB in the Nordics or the other way round. In  addition there are also possibilities to transfer between the Offices, so it doesn‘t have to be a final decision.

Hey there

- Working hours are a bit better than in Germany, yet I did not find it significantly better (as it is often stated) and I spent quite some time there at McKinsey

- Office culture was great; in my opinion better than in Germany, likely because the offices are overall a bit smaller

- Can't comment on that but you should get that in the contract, salary

- Can't comment on that either, prestige

- MBB gives you great global exit options across all geographies

All the best!

Cheers,

Florian

Hi there,

Honestly, the difference between two MBBs is far far greater than the difference between two offices in the DACH region.

If you could tell us which MBBs you have offers for? Working hours/compensation/prestige/exit opps are going to be different for McK vs Bain vs BCG but not so much between Germany and the Nordics.

The one difference here would be working hours. Hours in Germany are notoriously brutal (at least for BCG).

Hi Ian,
thanks a lot for your comment!
I will be interning at BCG in Oslo, the full-time offer after that is at Bain in Munich. Do you have any insights on culture/working hours/exit opps regarding the two firms on those specific locations?
Thanks again and best wishes!

Hello!

Congratulations!

My advise would be precisely to use your internship as a DD to get all this information about the nordic region (not only for your own experience, but also by doing a lot of reserach with people who have been a while in the company). And although is another MBB, I would do the same exercise for the DACH region -since usually among MBB in the same region it´s a very similar story-.

There are plenty of coaches here from both regions, I a sure they´ll share here some interesting stuff soon too

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

Working hours will be tougher in Germany, office culture likely to be nicer in Nordics ("smaller office culture", it's a more personal enviroment where you'll know most of the people).

I don't think there's much difference in compensation or prestige.

Regarding exit opportunities… there are much more opportunities to exit in Germany. This is a matter of variety, not of the quality of the opportunities. You have to consider here where you want to work long term and in which type of role / industry. The ability of the MBB to “outplace” you is similar in both regions, it's the opportunities themselves that are different according to the country.
