MBA for MBB?

Hello all,

I am an experienced professional with 9 years of industry experience. Is it a must to have MBA to apply for associate / consultant roles at MBB?

Thanks

Hi there,

Not in your case, given you have several years of experience (assuming your experience could be relevant for consulting). However, an MBA could help to get an additional shot, in case you don’t manage to get an offer applying now.

Overall I would recommend to:

  1. Apply now without MBA. If possible, try to find a referral. You can find more on that here: https://www.preplounge.com/en/consulting-forum/hey-everyonehope-all-is-well-3176
  2. If that doesn’t work and you believe an MBA could help in any case your career, complete a top MBA and apply again after it

Best,

Francesco

This is an easy one - no!

MBB are good at hiring MBAs but just as good at hiring experienced professionals from all over the place, including public sector, industry, military, etc.

I have quite a bit of experience in this domain, feel free to get in touch.

Hi there,

I am an experienced hire myself and I can confirm that you DONT have to have MBA to crack in, particularly as an experienced hire where you are bringing specific expertise. But I would strongly recommend to not apply to generalist role, rather making sure you apply to expert or affiliated role (a specific competence center such as industry). Nevertheless, you still must prove you are able to approach the problem as a generalist (usually MBA does help with that) and you pass the same recruiting process.

Not sure your seniority, but with 9 years of experience your level would be at least consultant, associate is too junior.

If you would like to explore more deeply, please feel free to reach out directly.

Hello!

I have seen multiple questions lately in the Q&A regarding doing masters, which one to choose, MBA vs. MiM, which schools to choose (both in US and Europe).

I joined McK after finishing my master in Architecture (totally not related field of study, and still), and I am doing an MBA in MIT atm. Furthermore, I have been a professor in the Master in Management from Instituto de Empresa, in Madrid (MiM in IE Business School). Happy to talk about this, and also happy to guide you with MBA applications, something that I have been doing lately.

In you case in particular, however, is not what so ever needed, you could perfectly join as an experienced hired. It comes down to: do you want to do an MBA, coz you think you would benefit from it, regardless of MBB?

Feel free to PM! Cheers,

Clara

Nope.

You can get in without an MBA, but with killer CV/Cover Letter, referral (s) and strong interview performance. A good referral is very important in this case.

It's not a must. But it is a possibility.

I suggest you try to get in MBB, and if you don't get an interview, then consider the MBA route.

Not in the slightest! You can absolutely get in as an experienced hire.

The best thing you can do is vamp up your resume and network extensively. Good luck!
