I want to receive updates regarding this question via email.

Just received an email from McKinsey for an additional Interview

Hi,

I have previously posted about my now 10 months long process with McKinsey here: https://www.preplounge.com/en/consulting-forum/should-i-give-up-hope-or-is-mckinsey-going-through-global-restructuring-16362

Just right now, they have emailed me saying: Would like to inform you that after the discussion we need to arrange for you an additional interview.
The local recruiter also sent me a WhatsApp saying: There's an additional read suggested for your profile and we have a slot for thursday 3pm?

At this point I am tired of the process and I also don’t know what this interview is now about. Can someone help me out? Is this normal for McKinsey? What should I expect?

UPDATE 1:

I asked the recruiter this: Hi ——, yes, I just saw the email - responding to it shortly.
In the meanwhile, could you please share clarity regarding this final read / interview?
Since I was of the understanding that the final interview had been conducted. If you could please elaborate what should I expect during this call

And this is what he responded: Yes it should be more like a chit chat

I am unable to figure out what construes a chit chat.

UPDATE 2:
I asked him: Alright, perfect. So this is would be an informal call and not a case session?

He responded: Correct. Won't say it informal though

Hello there,

It's great to hear that McKinsey is still interested in your candidacy after a 10-month process! McKinsey is known for its thorough and rigorous interview process, and additional rounds or interviews are not uncommon.

Receiving an email about an additional interview could serve a few purposes ranging from clarifications, further assessment, and final evaluation, etc.

Since they've suggested additional reading, it's likely that they want you well-prepared for a specific topic during the interview.

I would advise you to reach out to the interviewer to understand exactly if this is a case interview and if this will be the final one, review the suggested reading and revisit your experiences, reflect on the fit part and how McKinsey is still a good fit for you, and most importantly STAY FOCUSED AND POSITIVE, being invited for an additional interview is a positive sign. It means they're still interested and want to explore further. You are almost at the finish line this is definitely not the time to throw in the towel, give it your all.

Hope this helps!

Hi,

Based on my experience, an additional read is normally given when your previous rounds results are too drastic with one score in particular being very strong and that interviewer willing to push for you.

Often, the reason for a poor score in one interview is due to the case, and typically not due to ‘motivation’.

I would suggest that you clarify again that there will be no case interview, but anyways prepare for a full interview. The last thing you want is to be thrown off guard because of a wrong expectation.

Plan for the worst, hope for the best.

Hi,
So I had my call today with the associate partner under whom all product owners work in my region. In the beginning he said to me that this is not an interview but that he wants to understand more of my work. He then asked me some work related questions which was basically how I got the the growth numbers for the product I previously worked on.
He then asked me why I am applying to be a product owner and not in the digital team, which i believe I answered very well: explaining that I build products from zero to one and also have the experience to grow them. In the end, he said okay clear and I enjoyed the talk with you. I’ll brief the team from my side and I will have someone get in touch with you soon regarding What’s next. I know it has been a very long process but we were shuffling internally. I will have someone reach out to you soon. I enjoyed the chat with you.

What do you make of this conversation?

Hi Aleeya,

Q: I also don’t know what this interview is now about. Can someone help me out? Is this normal for McKinsey? What should I expect?

From what they shared, it seems like a fit interview without cases. It is not very common, but I have helped candidates who had an extra interview after the final one. Usually, this happens for experienced hire roles where the final chat is with the head of the practice.

I agree with Benjamin not to completely exclude a case despite what HR says. I know of cases where HR said there wouldn't be any case, and a case was asked instead.

Good luck!

Francesco

Hi Aleeya, it could range from simple motivation questions to examples of when you led a team/achieved something challenging. You can find some examples of questions here: https://www.preplounge.com/en/consulting-forum/bcg-behavioural-interview-14977

Hi Fransesco,

You have been a great help. So I just spoke to the recruiter and asked him if it is like a PEI. He said no it is not that specific let me give you the correct term. Then he paused and said as per the conversation, it is more of a formal touchpoint from your previous interviews and he’s gonna do maybe a fit interview as to check do you really fit in this role, not much extensive and would be focused on personal experiences and more of competency based questions.

What do you make of this situation and what should I expect the interview to be like

Hi Aleeya, from what they shared I would expect more questions on your motivation, however I would suggest reviewing general fit questions regardless, as possibly the interviewer might not follow what was anticipated by HR. Good luck!

Hi Aleeya, thanks for sharing. It seems the chat went well but only the interview can really assess how was your performance now. Fingers crossed for you!

HI Aleeya, I would recommend waiting one week from the interview to follow up, after that if possible I would contact HR over the phone for an update. Good luck!

Oh Wow!

What office is this?

This is by no means typical.

Best case scenario the recruiter is just somebody who is really casual but here it rather risks looking unprofessional.

Realistically, it sounds like they're on the fence about you. Probably it's not only because of YOU, but also because of the situation they are in and the entire consulting market.

My recommendation would be to treat it like an actual interview. I doubt it's going to be case focused, so instead I'd really focus on preparing the personal fit part.

Let us know how things work out in the end. I'm invested in the story by now :)

Best of luck!
Cristian

Hi there! It sounds like it went rather well. Indeed they seem to be rather confused internally whether they can still hire someone.

Hello,

This is not super typical, but sometimes companies will arrange extra interviews with candidates for a number of reasons.

Based on what they have told you, I would expect more of a fit interview / conversation about your background and experiences. But I would also advise you to be prepared for anything, and not completely rule out a case interview either. If you prepare both case and fit, you’ll be covered on all the bases. Best of luck!

Sounds like this is very much a “non-structured” fit interview. They want to know you're right for the firm. You're close - good luck!
