Job Position Level

Dear Forum,

Hope you are doing great. I just started my MBB job (have been for few weeks). When I apply I applied for Entry level (Associate 1 (BCG-Bain)/BA 1 (Mckinsey)) position. 

However, I realize now that most people who have a couple of/several years of industry experience/Non-MBA advance degree started at Senior Associate/Senior BA.

While I am not aiming for Senior Associate/Senior BA. I am trying to negotiate with them if they can review my position and probably move me to Associate 2 or BA 2 (Between associate and senior associate) for BCG/Bain. I am planning to discuss it with my manager/career development manager (not the project manager)

 

What is the best way to start this discussion ?

How should I frame it ?

Is it possible for them to review again (based on my CV and interview result) and probably move me one year up ?

You can bring the subject when close to the semester evaluations - if your performance is solid, this will help you fast track (i.e., you get promoted after 6 months).

If your performance is just average, you actually would rather have more time before you reach the up-or-out moment.

It's better to be seen as a fast tracker than as an average consultant starting at a higher level ;)

Hi there,

This sounds like a done deal. Consulting firms actually have an interest in giving you the seniority that is appropriate for you (in contrast to industry, where advancing is often hard) and are also good at judging what is actually appropriate.

For some reason they concluded that it's the role they offered and that's OK. Just remember how quickly people move up the ladder. It may just be a matter of months until you get promoted…

In any case, you got an offer from a top firm! Don't let your ego get in the way of recognising and celebrating this achievement!

First of all, let this be a lesson to do your proper research + networking when you apply/interview for firms!

Second, congrats on the offer!

Third, there's not a lot that you can do now, other than perform exceptionally well and flag your prior experience. Try to get fast-tracked. (Ask your manager)

I agree with Ian and Pedro. You cannot really renegotiate an offer after signing the offer. However, you can discuss the opportunity for fast promotion which could lead to a similar result.
