Interview: Mckinsey or BCG

Hi,

I’m currently interviewing for two roles: McKinsey Delivery Consultant – Public Sector, and BCG Experienced Hire.

From what I understand, McKinsey Delivery focuses more on implementation, pays less than strategy roles, and may have fewer exit opportunities. BCG seems to be a general strategy role.

With around 5 years of experience, which one do you think is better for me? Both would be based in Riyadh.

Also, is it a smart move to accept both offers (if I get them), stay one year at one firm, then switch to the other? A friend said this helps the CV and gives access to both alumni networks—but it sounds a bit risky. What’s your take?

Thanks!

I think you hit the nail on the head. Unless you’re particularly focused on learning implementation skills, a generalist BCG Experienced Hire role will pay more and probably give you more access to top-of-house management strategy projects.

I think it’s very risky and also a bit unethical to accept both offers - there should be small text in the contracts which forbids this. Also if a recruiter from one firm sees that you’ve accepted an offer at the other, they’ll likely rescind the offer they gave you. There’s no real advantage to accepting both offers and switching after a year anyway, from a CV perspective.

From a neutral point of view, there's really no comparison, McKinsey Delivery and BCG strategy are extremely different. BCG strategy (or any MBB strategy for that matter) is much stronger in terms of learning, pay, brand value, and exit opportunities. But keep in mind the BCG offer will be harder to land.

What I would recommend is to try to delay the McKinsey decision until you hear from BCG. That way, if BCG doesn't work out, you still have McKinsey delivery as a solid plan B. I wouldn’t recommend switching firms after a year just for the alumni network, it can come across poorly unless there's a strong reason.

hey!

You're right about the key differences: McKinsey Delivery is more implementation-focused, while BCG’s strategy role offers broader exposure, higher pay, and often stronger exits. I actually had both offers and went with McKinsey — happy to chat if helpful! Ultimately, it depends on your long-term goals, but switching firms after a year can be risky unless there's a clear reason.

Wow, that's intersting.

First of all, don't accept both offers and then switch from one to the other after a year. That's a really strange thing to hear. It looks plain odd in your CV, I doubt it's even enjoyable on a personal level, and I have no idea what 'access to both alumni networks' would imply :) Access to the network from the firm in 80% of cases means that you worked with people while in the firm, had a good relationship, and now that you've left the firm and they've left the firm you might come across each other in other roles in other firms. That's what it practically entails.

Your description of the roles is right, though I wouldn't say that the Delivery role with McKinsey limits your exit options because it depends on the sort of exit that you're contemplating.

I would suggest you do this more top down and do 2 things

1. Have a chat with 1-2 people from each firm who are in a similar role to the one you're targeting. Get a sense of what they do, their satisfaction, their complaints

2. Sit down and think honestly for yourself which one is more aligned with you and with your future

Best,
Cristian

Hi there,

I agree with the coaches above.

Besides that, have in mind that McKinsey’s brand is strong, and future employers won’t make a difference if you were a regular or a delivery consultant. Also, work life balance is better for this role compared to the strategy one. If you consider spend more time in this industry, these are some other aspects to think about.

Best,

Mari

1. Your interpretation is correct.

2. Which one is better for you? I have no information about you, so it is impossible to do a fit assessment on you vs. each role.

3. No, accepting both offers is not a smart move. It is actually a very dumb move:

  • a) Word will get around and it will hurt your reputation.
  • b) staying one year at one firm and then moving to a competitor signals you had issues at the first firm. While sometimes this happens and is not a big deal, it does not support one's CV in a positive way. having two firms is not better than one.
  • c) while it may give you access to two alumni website... that's not a network and it's not that valuable. Having a strong multi-year relationship from multiple people from one firm will be more valuable than being the person who was there only for a very brief period.
  • d) one, or both companies, may revoke their offer.
