Does anyone know how an industry hire at Bain works? Once they get hired, do they work as a specialist in the industry of their expertise or do they work as a generalist as other consultants while working on the relevant industry as a side project? Can someone shed some light on this? I am specifically talking about the US Offices.

Bain consultants tend not to specialise until later in their career paths (i.e. Engagement Manager and beyond).
As an industry hire, you could expect to follow the same generalist trajectory, although may find yourself more frequently selected for projects relating to your industry (and other previous) experiences.

The industry hiring process at Bain totally depends on what tenure you're applying for. Assuming you're applying to the Associate Consultant or Consultant position, you will definitely still come in as a generalist. You may get the opportunityt to leverage your past expertise, but it certainly isn't a prerequisite nor an expectation. Happy to chat more if you'd like. Best of luck with the process.

It should be in the role description.
If you are interviewing as a generalist - you can face any kind of a project. Of course, the company might want to leverage your prior experience in some projects, but it's not guaranteed.
