I'm considering applying to McKinsey and Bain, but I have some second thoughts about the working hours. How many hours do consultants typically work per week? Will I realistically have time for things like going to the gym, or is it more like working from 9 AM to midnight every d

It varies by the region and also by the country. In SEA, the usual hours would be 60+ hours a week. Of course there would be variations from time to time, project to project.

I heard some European countries are better especially Nordic. Not sure which part of Europe you are in.

It is possible, though, on some days when there is no urgent deliverable, that you might be able to take a few hours in the evening to go gym (or other activities) before resuming work afterwards.

Hi there,

It depends a lot on your country (strong differences even within Europe).

For Germany I would say the following: From Monday to Wednesday your proposed working hours are not that far off. On Thursdays, you might have a bit more time off in the evening if you’re lucky with your client, project and team. On Fridays, you should have most evenings to yourself. On weekends, it is usually not expected to work (especially below EM level).

Please note that you’ll travel to the client site from Mo - Thu (or at least 3 days per week) in most cases. This means that on the one hand, you’ll spend some time travelling (instead of going to the gym), but on the other hand, you might be able to use the hotel gym for a quick session in the morning/evening.

Cheers,

Kevin

Hi,

Adding to what was stated, you’ll probably have to sacrifice your sleep schedule to make time for other activities.

Hi There,

This is a great question! Realistically management consulting at MBB is usually going be on the more intense side. On average, probably around 60+ hours; however, much of this depends on the industry, function, team, and travel.

If going to the gym is a priority for you then you an make it work as many teams especially when working remote are okay with you taking 30 minutes to an hour to work out in the evening before you log back on, especially if you mention that early on. When traveling, working out definitely becomes more challenging.

Overall, there are going to be days and times where you will be working to midnight and are going to have to sacrifice working out and other hobbies during the work week.

Hope this helps!

My take differs slightly from what you have seen above.

Yes, you won't have tonnes of free time and your work will often take priority over other things during the week. 60+ hours per week is pretty common in most regions.

However, you CAN protect an hour+ in the evenings for things like gym, putting kids to bed, etc. by communicating clearly with your managers. If you set the expectation up front that you will be out at a certain time every day, this is possible. I have seen many consultants (myself included) doing this over the years.

However, it is contingent on you completing your deliverables on time and to a high standard, otherwise team members will not be as willing to give you any slack.

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, yes - working hours at strategy consulting firms can be intense, usually around 60-80 hours per week.
  • Moreover, in case you will end up with a consulting offer and join a consulting firm, I would advise you to block gym time in your calendar proactively. Many teams will be fine with you taking an hour in the evening if you get your work done - just be clear and consistent about it.

You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare your application files, for your upcoming McKinsey and/or Bain pre-interview assessments and/or interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Hi there,

Totally fair question.

Typical hours at McKinsey and Bain tend to range from 55 to 70 hours per week, depending on the project, client demands, and staffing model. Some weeks may be lighter (especially between projects), but others can stretch longer — especially during tight deadlines or travel-heavy cases.

Will you have time for the gym?
Yes — but it takes intention. Many consultants carve out time for workouts, dinners with friends, or short breaks — especially mid-week or on weekends. That said, sustained 9 AM to midnight weeks aren’t the norm, but they can happen during crunch periods.

It’s not a 9–5 job, but it’s also not nonstop chaos. The key is learning to manage your energy, protect pockets of personal time, and communicate proactively with your team.

Best,
Evelina
