I have been waiting to hear from McKinsey since last 6 months

I have been waiting to hear from McKinsey since last 6 months. I cleared my final round and they also took my salary slip. The recruiter sent this to me today when I followed up:

Hey A sorry I was travelling and couldn't respond earlier, things are yet under discussion and no clear directions have been received so far

What do I make of it and what should I do next? Can I bluff about a job offer?

Hi there,

I'm really really sorry to hear - this is SO frustrating.

It sounds like this particular's offices pipeline is struggling and they have too many staff for too few projects. The good news is that this balances out over time (up or out model means people will be leaving, and pipelines are starting to recover, generall).

The bad news is that you won't know when this is.

Ultimately, their message is not promising.

This is why it is so important to never quit your job or stop recruiting UNTIL you have a SIGNED OFFER. (now you know, it's ok that you didn't before).

I highly recommend you get back on the recruiting journey.

Best case scenario: You get an offer elsewhere, McKinsey finally sends you a contract, and you opt for McKinsey

Worst case scenario: You get an offer elsewhere and McKinsey never gets back to you.

I know it sounds tough, but you can't keep sitting around waiting for them without any sort of legal/official confirmation. You need to get recruiting again.

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear about this, this must be incredibly frustrating!

I would not recommend bluffing about a job offer - lying is never a good idea here. Instead, I would do the following:

  • Ask the recruiter whether they can provide some more detailed information about the outcome of your last interview and when they think a decision is likely to be reached, so that you can have some clarity for your own planning
  • Continue applying to other firms in the meantime - it's always best to not put all your eggs in one basket

Best of luck!

Hi,

I've heard similarly phrased feedback from some of my coachees from various firms, so you are not alone in this situation. You can only take the recruiter at face value and you will never know what is -really- happening behind.

I would not bluff about a job offer - instead I would continue to explore other options (while continuing to wait).

Hi there,

I am sorry for the situation, I can imagine how frustrating this is for you. In terms of your question:

Q: What do I make of it and what should I do next? Can I bluff about a job offer?

I would not recommend to lie. Instead, I would continue the process with other firms. If you do get another offer, you can then reach out at that time - unfortunately that's the only real form of leverage you might have in this situation.

Good luck!

Francesco

Wow!

So you've been waiting for a response following the final round for 6 months?

That must be a record.

I'm really sorry to hear.

Basically, you can ask for an update from them, saying that you want to know the outcome of the interview so you know whether you should be re-starting the interviewing process with other firms.

But aside from this, actually get going with sending other job applications. There's no point in waiting further here.

Here's a guide on how to build an application strategy:

Best,
Cristian
