How would I become a Management Consultant in the UK's consulting space given the situation of constant rejections?

Hello folks,

Hope everyone is doing great.

I am Krishna, a 2024 MBA graduate from Coventry University London, currently in London.

I am interested in becoming a management consultant in the UK’s consulting space. So, I started applying for consulting roles at the Big 4s and other consulting firms on Indeed/Reed. The results are not good with constant rejections.

I also have experience in the interviewer and interviewee-led cases by practising with AI.

Given this background, I sincerely seek your advice on how to get out of the web of rejections and become a consultant.

Best wishes,
Krishna.

Hi,

The first thing we need to understand is where exactly the rejections are happening, because the advice would be completely different depending on the stage.

For example:

  • Are you being rejected immediately after applying and not getting invited to interviews?
  • Are you getting interviews but failing during the screening/fit stage?
  • Are you reaching case interviews and being rejected there?
  • If so, at which round (first round, final round, etc.)?
  • Which firms have you applied to so far (Big 4, Tier 2, MBB, boutiques)?

Without this information, it's very difficult to diagnose the root cause.

For instance, if you're not getting interviews at all, the issue is likely related to your CV, application strategy, target firms, networking, or eligibility to work in the UK. If you're getting interviews but not offers, then the issue is more likely related to fit interviews, case performance, or communication skills.

Can you share a bit more detail on your application funnel so far (applications sent, interviews received, and where rejections occurred)? That would make it much easier to give useful advice.

Best,
Franco

Hey Franco,

Thanks for your reply, and yes, to be more specific, the rejections are happening at the pre-Interview stage, resulting in not getting any interview calls, which invariably points to positioning my CV as a Consultant CV but not a Universal/Generic CV.

How would I be able to cope with the challenges of rejection, which not only happens before the pre- interview stage of not getting the interview calls but also might happen at any of the remaining 4 stages mentioned by you?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,
Krishna.

Hi Krishna,

Based on what you wrote, I do not think case interview skills are your main bottleneck right now.

The fact that you are receiving constant rejections suggests the challenge is probably happening before the interview stage. In other words, I would first focus on your application strategy rather than spending more time practicing cases.

A few things come to mind.

First, have someone with consulting recruiting experience review your CV. Many candidates underestimate how much their resume affects interview invitations. A strong consulting CV is very different from a standard job application CV.

Second, relying mainly on Indeed and Reed is usually not the most effective approach for consulting recruiting. Most successful candidates also apply directly through firm websites, attend recruiting events, and network with consultants before submitting applications.

Third, be realistic about the current market. The UK consulting market has been more challenging over the past couple of years, even for strong candidates. Rejections do not necessarily mean you are not qualified.

I would also encourage you to broaden your target list. Do not focus only on Big 4 and the largest consulting firms. Many excellent boutique consultancies and specialized firms can provide a great entry point into the industry.

Finally, if you are not reaching interview stages, I would spend the next few weeks diagnosing why:

  • Is it your CV?
  • Your academic profile?
  • Your work experience?
  • Your application strategy?
  • Visa sponsorship requirements?

Once you identify the real bottleneck, the path forward becomes much clearer.

I have worked with several candidates who thought they had an interview-preparation problem, when in reality they had a resume-positioning or application-strategy problem.

If you would like, I would be happy to take a quick look at your CV and help identify potential gaps before you continue applying.

Best,

Soheil

Hey Soheil,

Thank you so much for your comprehensive explanation. As you've mentioned, I am not getting any interview calls, and I am quite used to seeing the 'Unfortunately......' messages.

In so far, my CV is concerned, it is the format shared by the Talent Team at school. When I say the word format, it means the details of the work experience, educational qualifications and the order in which they're placed.

Happy to connect with you for a CV review. Please let me know your availability.

Best wishes,
Krishna.

Hi Krishna,

Happy to help. I have sent you a private message.

Based on what you described, I suspect the issue may be more related to CV positioning and application strategy than interview preparation. Once I review your CV, I can provide more specific feedback.

Looking forward to connecting.

Best,

Hi Krishna,

Sorry to hear about this. It must be really frustrating.

First of all, it's a reality of the application process for everybody that you get rejections and that the consulting space is very competitive.

So then it's more of a question of whether you can do anything differently that is within your reasonable control.

To begin with, since I understand most of the rejections are at the screening stage, you might want to review your application package and strategy. Get some expert help on reviewing your CV as well as you positioning in the application process and which firms/roles you're targeting. Consider also getting referrals for these applications to increase the probability of passing screening.

The rejections aren't random, they're a pattern.

Likely reasons. Visa sponsorship filter (firms sponsor less in 2026). Coventry isn't a target school for UK consulting. Indeed and Reed are the wrong channels, strong candidates don't come through them.

What to do. Confirm your visa status, mention Graduate Route in applications if applicable. Stop applying through job boards. Build referrals through LinkedIn outreach to 30 to 50 consultants, don't ask for referrals in the first message.

Broaden beyond Big 4. Tier 2 (Roland Berger, OW, Kearney), specialist firms, boutiques. Rewrite CV with quantified impact.

If still nothing in 2 to 3 months, take an analyst role to build credentials, retry in 12 to 18 months.

Good luck.

Are you being invited to interviews and then rejected, or do you get rejected at the CV screening stage. These are two different problems.

AI practice... sorry, this is worthless.
