In a month or so I am starting a new job as a delivery consultant and Mckinsey in London. I have not worked in consulting previously.

Please can people advise how I can best prepare.

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the McKinsey offer!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your situation:

  • First of all, while it is great to see how eager you are to prepare for your consulting career start, I would highly advise you not to worry about it. All major consulting firms provide you with excellent onboarding and training that will prepare you for everything you need to know.
  • Moreover, if you still want to prepare on your own, I would advise you to focus on learning common MS Excel functions as well as MS Excel and PowerPoint shortcuts.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hey there,

I'm sure you'll get lots of recommendations for content and material to prepare with.

I wouldn't worry too much because you'll learn a lot on the job from your EMs and more tenured BAs / ASCs.

If do decide that you need extra support I can guide you through how to build McKinsey-style models, charts, and presentations - I have plenty of examples that I can share with you before you join. Particularly for visual communication, McKinsey has its own unique style.

Excel modelling is pretty similar across firms and unless you're doing more complex modelling (i.e., O&G fiscal modelling), it's mostly just robust logic and basic formulae rather than complex math.

Best of luck.

Hi there,

I think differently from coaches above. As a person who didn't have consulting experience, I wish I had learnt some things before the job to be able to sleep more (literally). Here it goes:

Conceptual skills: The two most important things at McKinsey are how you deal with clients (how you can persuade them and how much they trust you) and how good you are at problem solving. So:

1. Read about how to deal with difficult people, communication styles based on the personal preferences (e.g.: SCARF) and how to delight clients. Make notes to use this knowledge, is not something for you to read and trust your memory.

2. Work on your PS skills - you should be able to bring new perspectives and proactively suggest improvements to your work. Also, execute them. Same advice as above.

Hard skills:
1. Excel course, from basic to advanced (models). This can be covered in one week and will help you a lot. McKinsey has excel experts also, but usually you have to book them overnight, so it is very important that you're skilled in it.

2. Powerpoint with Thinkcell. McKinsey also has some visual graphic assistants, but they also work over booking and you will have to do a lot of pages in your work.

3. Alteryx: nice to have, way much better than excel to work with large datasets.

I wish you all the best in this upcoming endeavor, have fun, learn a lot and don't take this job too seriously - be professional and give your best, but remember it is just a job! ;-)

Honestly, best way to prepare is to get your "belly" full of other good things. Catching up on sleep, traveling around, being with family and friends.

Making sure your wardrobe is ready and up to date (inc. travel gear) is paramount, it will save you some time later. Doesn't need to be the higher brand, but make sure you match the style of business people / consultants.

Hi,

I think the most useful prep that I wish I had done was to:

  • Memorise and learn all the short-cuts on Excel and Powerpoint - really take the time to learn these it will increase your productivity
  • Excel basics: Do any form of Excel course, there are normally free ones online - You should learn pivot tables, basic modelling, and formulas to organise various types of data.
  • Start connecting with relevant people on Linkedin and once you start - Reach out to all partners to make sure you are known and that you're eager to work.
  • Have fun now - once you start working, its going to be a lot - so enjoy your downtime.

Then once you're in the office:

Go knock on doors, get to know people, you're new so open yourself up to new opportunities - the London office is big, so staffing is quite competitive, so you need to get yourself out there. (don't assume your PD will always staff you - you need to make your own McK (cheesy but true))

Also, I don't think you need to try to learn too many things about McK presentations - once you start working it's pretty intuitive to pick up, the layouts, and the formats and you'll be doing so many in a day, it will become second nature quickly.

Good luck!

I have an upcoming initial round for the role of Consultant with Orphoz- a McKinsey Company. Can someone help me by giving some more information about the company. How to prepare, hiring process, work-life balance, benefits? Does it give same learning opportunities as McKinsey?
