How is MBA summer internship recruiting looking like for summer 2025?

For MBB, students matriculating in September 24 will be interviewing for summer 25 internships next summer.

I’ve heard last year was a bloodbath even for top schools, and this year is shaping out the same way. How is next year looking those matriculating in the fall?

Hi there,

Definitely too early to say.

Very very hard to play the prediction game, however, the pendulum tends to swing.

2022 they WAY overhired. 2023, with interest rates spiking and economic uncertainty, the pipeline was crushed.

Now, with a rebalancing of staff, pipeline, and normalization/soft landing of the economy, it does seem like things are picking up again (I mean, just look at the increase in activity in M&A, equities, etc.)

Anecdotally, many of my contacts across MBB, the Big 4, etc. and around the world are saying pipelines are looking healthier and hiring should be picking up.

If I'm a betting man I'd say this year will be much better than last (read: “normal”. Not incredible, but also not a bloodbath)

Now, remember, hiring ALWAYS STILL HAPPENS. What matters most is YOU.

Get the best resume possible, network a ton, get case coaching to actually make your insanely expensive MBA investment count.

^if you do the above, there's no reason you should not get a consulting offer.

From what I've seen it's better than last year in terms of offers being recieved at least in the US

Hi there,

I have 2 perspectives on this:

1. Talked to a McK recruiter last fall and their outlook back then was that 2024 should be much better than 2023.

2. From what I hear from my clients it still seems to be very tricky though so maybe the push is coming later in the year. We are still very early in the year of course…

Overall, it is very hard to forecast and there are a lot of moving parts. Also, the situation might change very quickly.

I would work on what you can control:

  • Your grades and resume
  • Networking and referrals
  • Recruitment test prep
  • Case and fit interview prep
  • Creating back up plans and alternative paths

Keep us updated and come back for more info later in the year!

All the best,

Florian

#1 rated McKinsey Coach | top MBB coach

Needless to say, impossible to tell.

From how I observed the market, and the chats I've had with friends still in consulting and from studying how the number of candidates on PrepLounge has changed, the market is already recovering. But, this is just one opinion.

The reality is that all of this is outside of your control, so I wouldn't spend much time thinking about it. Sharing with you a guide I put together on how to approach the recruitment process during an economic downturn:

Best,
Cristian
