Has anyone noticed consulting firms avoiding Graduate visa holders due to future sponsorship concerns?

Hi everyone

I’m currently on the UK Graduate visa, which allows full-time work without sponsorship and my Visa is not running out anytime soon. I’ve recently been told by a consulting firm that they wouldn’t consider me because I might need sponsorship in the future, even though I don’t need it now.

I’m wondering if this is a new, wider trend in consulting? Have others experienced the same? Is it now common for firms to filter out candidates just based on potential future visa needs, even if they’re fully eligible to work right now?

Unfortunately, that’s pretty normal for the UK. London is a very competitive market, and needing visa sponsorship (which basically means extra hassle for the employer) doesn’t really work in a candidate’s favor, especially in consulting, where there are hundreds of applicants for each spot who don’t require sponsorship.

Hi there,

First of all, I am sorry to hear about your negative experience!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your situation:

  • First of all, yes - some consulting firms in the UK, especially smaller or mid-sized ones, may avoid candidates due to long-term sponsorship concerns. Even if your current visa allows full-time work, they sometimes anticipate the future steps as too much hassle.
  • Moreover, this has become more common in the current job market. With tighter budgets and many strong applicants who don’t need sponsorship at all, consulting firms often choose the path of least resistance.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hey there,

Unfortunately it's a tough market in the UK and what you've described is quite common. Even MBBs will encourage you to apply for your local office instead.

To my knowledge all MBBs and Tier 2 consulting firms (Big 4, OW etc.) sponsor visas. Beyond that it's quite rare.

Hi there!

That must be frustrating. I'm sorry to hear.

Well, basically, if their company policy is that they don't support visa applications, then they are not willing to do it at any stage in the process (even if it might happen later).

I wouldn't say it's a trend that is accentuating. I think it's just rather unfortunate that it happened exactly with the firm you were targeting.

I would encourage you to look at alternative firms, and considering your situation, have a plan B just in case.

Best,
Cristian

Hey there,

Yes, unfortunately this has become more common, especially with smaller firms or in tighter markets. Some firms avoid any risk or future admin burden, even if you're currently eligible. It’s frustrating but not always personal.

That said, many larger consulting firms (especially MBB, Big 4, and tier-2 players) are still open to Graduate visa holders and regularly sponsor after. So don’t get discouraged, just focus your energy on firms with clear sponsorship history.

Let me know if you want help identifying those!

best,
Alessa :)

It does happen, especially in sub-par market conditions like this.

Outside of MBBs and top boutiques, many consulting firms will not sponsor a visa unless there is a good reason for them to do so.
