Greater China Office Application Strategy

Hi, I'm wondering whether it is feasible to apply to an overseas office which speaks the same language and you have work permit, but have never worked in the country before?

Many people suggested me to apply to the office where I am based at (i.e. my hometown), as they think that it would be “easier” as I am familiar with the local market. However, due to family reason, I am thinking to apply to the overseas office. In addition, the project type and opportunities in my country seems relatively limited and projects are focused on industries that I am less interested.

Given that my end goal is to work at the overseas office within 1 - 2 years of time frame, would you recommend me to directly apply to the overseas office, or get my foot in MBB in my country first and try to transfer in 1-2 years? Thank you for your kind feedback!

Hi there,

This is indeed an interesting, very specific question, so I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • Complementary to what other people said, if you know the language and have all work permits, I would advise you to apply to the overseas office right away.
  • Regarding the preparing, your friends are somewhat right to say you should know the “local market”, i.e. the dominating industries in the resepctive country and for the respective consulting company. Moreover, I would advise you to reach out to people in that office to get a better understanding what it will really be like to work there. It will provide you confidence for your decision and in the upcoming interviews.

In case you want a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for the upcoming applications and recruiting processes in overseas, please feel free to contact me directly.

I hope this helps,

Hagen

Hello,

If you speak the language and have a work permit, I don't see any issues with applying to work in the overseas office you want. The most common problems with hiring internationals are precisely the language barrier and visas/work permits, so given that you have those two covered it shouldn't be an issue. It also seems like you have some good reasons for applying there (in terms of industry opportunity + family reasons).

One hundred percent! If you speak the language and have work rights, you can absolutely apply there.

Now, before applying make sure you've networked extensively with the office. You want them to know that you're genuinely interested in their office - this will greatly improve your odds.

Hi!

I would apply directly to the desired office. Why waiting if you can make it now? :)

Hope this helps.

Best,
