Got invitation to online case after applying for BCG Project Leader to Partner, Insurance Practice - what to expect?

I have 15+ YOE across financial services and insurance industry leading multi-billion dollar digital transformation, strategy and operations projects. Haven't worked in consulting.

Saw the BCG Project Leader to Partner, Insurance Practice, decided to apply. Got the case invite.

Trying to get a better understanding on how the recruitment process happens for this level? I was under impression BCG doesn't hire externally below Consultant level.

What is the best way to prepare? Did any of you manage to pivot from industry to consulting at this level?

Ex BCG Principal & Global Interviewer (10+ Years) | 100+ MBB Offers | 95% Success Rate

Hi,

I’ve been involved in recruiting at BCG for quite a few years, including a couple of PLs,so I can share a bit of perspective.

First of all, BCG does hire externally at senior levels, and this has actually become more common over time as consulting has moved towards more specialized expertise rather than pure generalist profiles. So your background is definitely relevant.

That said, the process at this level is a bit different from junior roles. You will still have some case interviews, but:

  • they tend to be less “textbook casing” and more high-level
  • a big part of the process will be technical and commercial discussions with Partners/MDPs

They’ll really want to understand:

  • your expertise in insurance
  • your ability to drive client impact
  • and  your commercial mindset (e.g., client ownership, selling work, influencing stakeholders)

On prep:

  • cases → worth doing a couple of sessions with a professional coach to get comfortable with structure and communication (hard to fully self-train on that) --> happy to help with that! Just DM me to set up a free intro call and discuss how I can help
  • fit / storytelling → probably the most important piece for you; make sure your experience comes across clearly, with strong impact

On the online test:
it’s usually Casey, which tests logical, analytical, and business judgment skills. Honestly, it’s a bit unusual to see it at PL level, so I’d probably double-check with recruiting what exactly they expect from it. Once you know exactly what the assessment is, let me know and I'll be more precise on  how you can prepare more specifically.

Hope this helps; feel free to reach out if you want to go deeper.

Best,
Franco

Ex-McKinsey Interviewer & Manager | +7 yrs Coaching | Go from good to great

Hi there,

You're right that it's very uncommon to hire laterally straight into Project Leader. That being said, it happens in rare cases due to other drivers. In this case, it is possible that they desperately need someone with insurance expertise. If you join, you'll most likely have to play the role of someone more junior for ~6 months before actually playing the role of a Project Leader.

You would prepare for the interview like how any candidate would prepare for MBB interviews: fit + case interview. I suggest read up on the basics of a case, try one with a coach to get sharp feedback on areas you should improve, practice live with peers, and then have another session with the coach to see your progress and how much more practice you need.

I've worked with several external hires at Manager and AP level transferring into consulting, so if you need help, reach out.

What's important to know, as a starting point:

  • They care less about your consulting skills and more about your knowledge
  • The more senior the role the less structured the process is
  • Most likely you'll end up having several rounds with several senior people within the practice
  • The interviews will be more focused on your value proposition and less on the case. They'll be keen to also understand your leadership experience and your deepest areas of knowledge

Best,
Cristian
