From Venture Capital to Strategy Consulting

Hello team,

I graduated 2 years ago from a business school (not top target but still appreciated school in Tier 2 firms).

I started my career in Venture Capital in a small firm, multi sector. I worked on all the energy subjects we had.

I want to apply to Tier 2 consulting firms in February 2026.

Is it possible to transition from VC to Consulting ? Especially in Energy Consulting.

Best & many thanks :)

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on your career trajectory thus far!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, it’s definitely possible to move from VC to consulting, especially if you position yourself as an energy sector expert.
  • Moreover, since you plan to apply in early 2026, you have plenty of time to actively prepare your application files and reach out to the energy practices of your target consulting firms. And if I were you, I would also apply to McKinsey, BCG, and Bain, unless you have any personal reasons not to do so. As the largest consulting firms, they typically also have the highest hiring needs.

You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare your application files, for your upcoming pre-interview assessments and/or interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

Yes—transitioning from Venture Capital to Strategy Consulting is absolutely possible, especially with your energy sector exposure. In fact, your VC background can be a real asset, particularly for Tier 2 firms with strong Energy or Private Equity practices (e.g. Strategy&, LEK, Roland Berger, or EY-Parthenon).

Here’s how to position yourself:

  • Play up your sector expertise in energy—firms value candidates who bring depth in high-demand verticals.
  • Highlight transferable skills: market analysis, strategic thinking, financial modeling, and working with C-level teams—these align closely with consulting work.
  • Be ready to explain why you’re shifting to consulting (broader exposure, faster learning curve, team-based problem solving, etc.) in a compelling, forward-looking way.

With a focused story and prep, you’ll be in a strong spot for February 2026 recruiting.

Happy to help you prep – feel free to reach out.

Best,
Evelina

Hi there,

Yes, the move from VC to consulting is absolutely possible, especially with your energy focus. From what you describe, you’re in a good position to position yourself at the intersection of energy industry expertise and finance/PE-related work – that’s a combination many consulting firms value, especially in their Strategy & Corporate Finance / PE, or Energy practices.

In your applications, I’d emphasize your sector knowledge plus your experience in market assessments, due diligence, and investment thinking - that’s essentially strategy consulting from a different angle.

Focus on showing that you bring both the industry depth and the financial-strategic mindset. That will help you stand out especially amongst peers with more generalist profiles.

Feel free to reach out directly if you need help to craft your story (CV / cover letter), or if you need help with the case or fit part of the interviews!

Cheers,
Kevin

Hi there,

Yes it is totally possible especially given you are only 2 years in VC.

Your chance would probably be higher if you choose to focus on the energy sector and emphasize your expertise / experiences in Energy consulting.

Key next steps for you would be: (1) prepare well for the case interview, to showcase that you can do structured problem solving; (2) try to do some networking with people in the energy sectors in your target firms and see how they can help you.

Best,

Emily

Hi there,

Actually, that's a well-trodden road - VC to consulting or in the other direction.

Reach out to recruiters from the firms you're targeting and figure out whether they have openings in their Energy practice. You'll have a comparative advantage there.

And apply broadly. You might find this guide useful in terms of how to set up the application process:

Make sure that in your CV you draw clear parallels from your experience to consulting like situations.

Best,
Cristian

Hi,

It would be possible, but I think there is some nuance here.

  1. You could qualify as a generalist given you only have 2 years of working experience
  2. There are a few coaches who are saying you are coming in with industry depth - sorry but I don't think this is the case. 2 years hardly qualifies you as an industry expert in most expert track scenarios
  3. Building on point #2 above, w.r.t Energy Consulting, it is important to differentiate the types of Energy Consulting. You will be relevant for deals/M&A within the Energy space, so closer to a mix of PE work actually, but you will not be relevant as an industry 'expert' for the bulk of the Energy work that is done in strategy/operations
    1. The profile of people in the Energy practice from industry are often actual practitioners / operators - either working upstream/downstream... from Shell, BP or the local equivalent e.g. Petrobras, Petronas

Hey there :)

Yes, totally possible to move from VC to strategy consulting, especially if you focus on your energy exposure and analytical skills. Highlight your market analysis, strategic thinking, and project ownership in VC. Tier 2 firms will value that, especially for energy-focused roles.

Happy to help with CV or prep if you need!

best,

Hi there,

Q: Is it possible to transition from VC to Consulting? Especially in Energy Consulting.

Yes, that’s possible, however, you might not be able to focus on the Energy sector right away (unless the company specializes only in that). Most likely, you will start as a generalist and then have the option to join a specific practice.

Good luck!

Francesco
