Forth round! 🤪

Dear community,

Please advice on how to treat the forth (!) round at McKinsey!

With my private business and startup experience I was contacted by McK HR and offered to apply around year ago. I was interested in EM+ positions only, was offered interviews for Sr Assoc/ Jun EM. After the game and 2 rounds I was appointed for the third round which was totally indistinguishable from the first two rounds. They will come back to me, I was said. Now, after some 2 months after the third round, I am offered the forth round.

What is that? How to treat it? Worth it?

Congratulations on being offered more interview rounds than I have ever heard of! I assume that the Partners just love casing with you…

Jokes aside, I have a few thoughts:

1. I have never heard of anyone joining McKinsey as an EM. Even with super experienced hires they always started as Associates, even if they were fast tracked through to Associate Partner (AP). This is because although you have a lot of work experience, you don't have experience being a McKinsey EM and you need to learn how to run a case and a McKinsey team (which is different from any team I've ever run). Therefore it makes sense that they're asking you to join as a Senior Associate (which is essentially the same thing as a Junior EM). It's worth asking the recruiting team how promotion works and how quickly you can expect to be up for promotion if this is something that you're interested in.

2. The rounds are all the same. Normally round 1 is essentially a screening round before round 2, which is when final decisions are made. Round 1 is normally run by Associates / EMs; whereas Round 2 is Partners and sometimes APs - these are the ones who make the final call. I can only assume that because the process has been so drawn out they keep on needing to re-interview. I would ask the recruiter how they expect round 4 (?!) to be different and then ask for clarity on where you are in the process and what more they expect from you.

Good luck!

Hey there,

Based on what you have written I can imagine the conversations going on in the background.

While it is harder to join McKinsey as an EM, it is not uncommon at all. I have coached a couple of people direct-to-EM (feel free to check out my reviews here on PrepLounge).

What usually happens after they join is that they start their first project as a Sr. Associate to learn the ropes, then move into their designated role.

Regarding your situation, you can expect the fourth interviews to go as the ones before with a potential focus on your leadership abilities and other PEI topics (focus on impact!).

Reach out if you want some help with that. :-)

Cheers,

Florian

Hi there,

Basically it's hard to join these firms at a higher level. Because there's more at stake, they need to make sure you're absolutely right for the role!

There should be not major differences in this round - they are just going through another round of validations.

Good luck!

McKinsey typically recruits everyone as an Associate so make sure you are familiar with the McK way of doing things before you start managing teams and projects. There are some exceptions to this but the only ones I have seen are direct recruits from other consulting firms.

What they do instead is promote you quicker once they see that you are very capable of running projects etc based on your performance.

As for the fourth round - that is a little strange. Reach out to HR and ask them what it is the reasoning behind this round and what are they hoping to get clarity on here vs the first 3 rounds. It is likely that they think you are a strong candidate but there may be 1 or 2 areas where they are not convinced (such as structuring).

Best,

Udayan

To put it simple, it is very hard to get offered an EM position directly.

My suggestion is don't take it personally. Just to this 4th round because it will not be different from the previous one. They simply want to see that you are consistent and maybe they prefer to have also a Senior Partner interviewing you.

Hello,

Wow, that's a lot of rounds! I think that it's quite rare for someone to join McK directly at the EM level, so they may just want to have an extra pair of eyes assess you before giving you an offer for such a senior position. Feel free to ask HR about the logistics and format of the interview, but my guess is that it will be a similar format as your prior rounds, perhaps with someone more senior like a partner conducting the interview. In any case, an additional interview round is a clear sign that they are still interested in you, else they wouldn't take time out of their day to interview you. Best of luck!
