Extra interview

Hi,

I did 2 final round interviews a week ago. I felt one was not great but the other one went really well. Now the HR got in touch with me saying I will have a 3rd interview, even though the process was designed for 2 final interviews. So I have a couple questions:

1 - Should i expect a regular interview?

2- Is this partner deciding my outcome or what is the decision process like?

Thaks!

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on having gone to the (almost) end of this round of interviews!

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for quite a lot of users, so I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • Generally speaking, you are being offered this 3rd interview since either the interviewers strongly disagreed with regards to your performance (very likely given your description) or you did OK in a specific dimension but not quite well enough to convince the interviewers right away (rather unlikely).
  • As such, the 3rd interview will most probably be of the same format as the other 2 interviews yet you will most certainly be tested in the dimensions where your interviewers disagreed upon so far. Thus, I would advise you to politely ask the recruiter about feedback from the first interviews in case you have not already been provided some. In case you have and will not receive any feedback, I would advise you to think carefully about your performance along the different components of the two interviews and where interviewers might have disagreed upon to focus on those aspects.
  • Without knowing the specific consulting company, it is hard to answer whether the 3rd interviewer will decide stand-alone or whether it will be a committee of all of your interviewers. That being said, it will most probably be another committee where the impressions of all interviewers are being consolidated since the 3rd interview will be held to clarify the observations being made.

In case you want a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your 3rd case study interview, please feel free to contact me directly.

I hope this helps,

Hagen

Hi there,

First, it sounds odd, but congrats on getting this far! The fact that you're even on the fence for an offer means that you've done a great job. Now, to answer your questions:

1 - Should i expect a regular interview?

Yes. Fit + Case unless otherwise indicated. They will focus particularly on the weak areas identified by your interviewers.

2- Is this partner deciding my outcome or what is the decision process like?

For all intensive purposes, yes. Don't worry about the “behind the scenes". You can't control that and it ultimately doesn't matter. Regardless as to how it specifically works, you need to crush this case. So, go crush this case! It does indeed determine your fate.

Good luck!

It's not unheard of.

You can expect a regular interview… with a partner. What I mean here is that sometimes partners do case interviews other times they do their own thing… You have to be prepared for both situations.

Now, if both the interviews you had were with partners and were “usual” interviews, I would take it as a sign that in that office partners then to stick to the process, and the 3rd one will likely be similar.

Of course, expect him to focus on the topics that wen't wrong on the interview that went bad. Those are the things they have doubts on.

So yes, you have one partner that wants to hire you, a second partner that has doubts, and this third partner is there to break the tie.

Hi!

1. Yes.

2. It will have a strong influence on your success. Having a third interview is probably a signal there was a “tie” between your performance in the two interviews.

Good luck,

Anto

Hi there,

Third rounds are usually created when the candidate is borderline.

In most cases it converts into an offer.

They usually just want to make sure you are what they're looking for.

Best,
