Hi everyone! I have an interview coming up based off of a referral from a partner who is recruiting me to come in as an expert associate parter or EM but preferably(in his words) EAP. How does the interview process work for expirenced hires on the expert track? Is it still the same or is it geared towards your specific area of expertise. I have heard a mixed bag of answers.
Experienced hire partner/ Engagement manager level McKinsey

Hey there,
Probably why you may have heard a range of answers is because it is sometimes office / region specific. Generally, the recruiting process for experienced hires is no different than MBA / Undergrad. The differences may come in with the type of cases and amount of sponsorship or experienced required for screening purposes
You would still follow the same route as in the general case (i.e. case interviews and PEI's) and depending on your area of expertise - you'd either be subject to general cases (meaning on any topic) or limited to the practice you will be joining.
Some McKinsey offices and regions design the expert track such that cases are aligned to the areas of expertise better than others.
I'm happy to chat with you on this privately and more in depth if you'd like.
All the best!

Hi there,
In short, ask the recruiter. They will be able to explain how it works specifically for that office and that role.
Typically, it's similar in structured to the generalist interviews, only that you might have a technical interview as well that actually seeks to evaluate your knowledge (the usual case interviews rather seek to evaluate your skills).
In some cases, you might also have the case studies specifically from your industry of expertise.
And in some cases, the process itself might be less structures - a sequence of calls, some focused on case, others on fit, with different members from that particular practice.
Best,
Cristian

There's a lot of variability here. I'd echo other coaches' advice to speak to your recruiter.
You'll still have some cases and PEI to do, but there's also a good chance they'll ask you to talk more about your expertise and experience delivering large scale projects. They'll also be assessing your commercial potential and trying to get a sense for the depth of your network - since at this level you need to sell projects.
Best of luck.

Hi there,
First of all, congratulations on the invitation from McKinsey!
I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:
- First of all, I would strongly advise you to reach out to the recruiter as soon as possible to know for certain. Especially for experienced hire candidates, application processes can vary depending on the specific role and practice.
- Moreover, generally speaking, you will still have to complete case studies and talk through PEI situations in your interviews, even if you may have additional conversations with the senior leadership of the specific practice or participate in other interview formats.
You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.
If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming McKinsey interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.
Best,
Hagen

Hi there,
In addition to what was stated, check with HR if you could have a buddy (consultant assigned to help candidates) to case with. That will help you to have a grasp on what to expect.
Best,
Mari
