Does a Master’s degree work necessarily in German MBB?

Hello,

I have a bachelor’s degree of international business, and I am considering between German master’s degree of management or German bachelor’s degree of management and technology to work at one of German MBB in the future.

I actually focus more on the bachelor’s degree of mgt and tech since it will make the specialization in computer engineering. However, I am still thinking about time and costs efficiency.

Are there significant differences between the degrees in the strategy consulting industry?

I deeply appreciate your thought and advice.

Hi there,

I think for a German MBB continuing with a master after you already have a bachelor degree will be significantly more valuable (and the natural course of action).

While the technology part of the bachelor might sound interesting (I am sure it is), it would not be that valuable in itself in consulting - for example, it would very much still not make you any expert in technology. It is much better I think to do the masters, get some internships under your belt, then get the MBB job and work from there in the sectors that most interest you, e.g., technology.

Hope this helps,

Ariadna

Thank you for the answer. But do you think I have a competitive advantage when my bachelor’s degree (not German uni.) is from low-ranked university?

Hi there! Competitive advantage for getting into an MBB or for getting into the masters?

For the master's I cannot speak, as I don't know the selection criteria, but if you refer to being accepted into an MBB, I would still say your chances are higher if you do a Masters Degree in Germany vs. two Bachelors, out of which one is in Germany. Of course, all the other selection criteria would very much apply (proven interest in consulting, good academic performance, speaking German and the right to work in Germany, etc.)

Hi there,

It is not needed but can significantly improve your profile.

For instance, McKinsey Germany hires Bachelor graduates as Junior Fellows. The time until the educational leave or the promotion to Sr Associate would then be 3 weeks instead of 2.

All the best,

Florian

Great question! Generally, a master’s degree can offer a quicker route to specialized roles in strategy consulting, but a bachelor’s in management and technology may provide a strong foundation and relevant tech skills. Consider your long-term career goals and which program aligns best with them.

Usually the masters will be preferred.
