Do I have a chance of getting into MBB? If so, what should I do?

Hi,

I have around 2 years worth of big4 experience and an unconverted summer internship in IB.

I'm keen to know whether I have chance of getting an offer at MBB. If so, what should my next steps be?

Hi there,

This is way too little information to go on. Feel free to share some more details regarding:

  • Academics: Institution(s), degree(s), GPA, study abroad, awards, etc.
  • Professional: Complete work history with roles and some highlights
  • Extra curricular: Anything you deem worth mentioning that will make you look “better” e.g. leading the local boy scouts, being on the board of your schools consulting club, mentoring younger students at school, etc.
  • Goals: Aside from knowing your background, it's important for us to understand what your motivation is and what you're aiming for e.g. country, seniority, function, etc.

Let us know and we can provide some more input!

Hi Moritz,

Thank you for your reply,

Academics: University of Manchester (UK), First class Economics , Dean Award for Achievement

Professional: 2 years at big 4 (1 and a half years in audit and 6m in risk advisory), part-qualified ACCA. 10 week internship at HSBC IB

Extra curricular: Play for a local football team, was part of two panels at my former school to talk to students about my experiences. Actively involved in recruitment activities for current employer.

Goals: My motivation is to get a broader knowledge of industries and more client exposure. Also, strategy is much more interesting than risk in my opinion. My current role is industry specialised and I have limited client interaction. Looking to apply to roles in London, UK. And I think an entry level role is realistic.

Hi there,

Of course - the fact that you have 2y of big4 experience would make you great as an experienced hire.

What I'd do:

1. Reach out to your network (or via LinkedIn) to people working in MBB to learn more about the firms and potentially get referrals from them.

2. Develop an application strategy (e.g., which are the target firms, which ones to apply to first) and timeline (e.g., planning to have an offer by x date)

3. Start preparing for the actual interviews. This can take quite a bit of time and money, but it's the core thing in being successful - self-preparation, prep w other candidates, prep w experts.

4. Try getting some consulting experience in the meantime. This will boost your CV and thus your chances of passing the screening as well as develop your raw skills for the interview and the future job. Consider joining a club at the university or doing a short-term internship or placement with a smaller consulting company.

Good luck! An exciting journey ahead!

Hi there, trust this finds you well.

Being very objective here, based on the information you shared, your big4 experience looks like a fit for a role at MBB, provided you do well on the process. So, in summary, yes, I would go for it.

To be more confident and confirm the hypothesis, I would definitely reach out to people from your network that are currently in your target offices, to understand the “moment" of the offices you are willing to get to. Usually if the business is heated, it increases the chance of an Industry Hire

After that, there is no secret formula, you will have to start the applications and prep/training - for which you can get plenty of support inside preplounge. Would just advice you to not take the case prep for granted because you already made it to the big4: MBB recruiting processes are challenging, and sometimes the difference between success and failure is hidden in minor details.

Reach out if you need anything more specific, and hope this helps!

Wish you good luck!

Afonso

I don’t see why not but hard to say without knowing more about your background including academic achievements.  A promotion at your current big 4 firm will be a plus too.

Hello!

Yes, for sure, there were plenty of people in McK that came from Big4 (and for sure the IB internship would be a strong asset).

The first step is the CV, why don´t you post it here sanitized to get some feedback? Some coaches also have the option to do a shorte rand cheaper CV focused session to help you have it as sharp as possible.

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

Do I have a chance of getting into MBB?

Yes.

Big 4 + IB provides a good basis for your resume, of course assuming that the rest of your resume is strong.

If so, what should I do?

1) Network, network, network (and try to get a referral)

2) Make your resume as good as possible (get a professional review)

3) Get additional experience (skills, consulting projects, etc.)

Good luck!

Hi there!

You may start by selecting what consulting firm, what role, where… once you know I would recommend you:

1. Understand well the recruting process of each firm, https://www.preplounge.com/en/articles

2. familiar yourself with the type of cases you can get https://www.preplounge.com/en/bootcamp.php and check cases published on PrepLounge

3. Practice math!

4. Dont learn any framework by hard, understand rather how to structure a problem and form a hypothesis to prove/disprove with an analysis

5. Practice with peers and take a few sessions with a coach, eventually do one diagnostic session to tell you where you stand and what your next steps should be

Feel free to reach out if you need a coach to support you, I am rewarded as a top BCG trainer, training new hires all the consulting skills (including how we create frameworks), as well as experienced coach.

Good luck!

Lucie
