Delivery Consultant London steps

Hi all,

I am applying to a Delivery Consultant role for McKinsey in London. I completed the Solve test a couple of weeks ago and is now having an interview with the Mckinsey recruiter in the next few days. They said it's only 15min to learn about me and career aspirations. I'm trying to prepare for this interview but realise this doesn't follow any of the normal process described online (i e Solve then 2 rounds of interviews etc). Does anyone know if this is normal? And how should I prepare for this interview?

Hi there,

Congrats on reaching the recruiter call—it’s a standard phone screening for experienced hires.

What to expect:

  • A 15–30 min call to review your résumé, motivations, and fit for McKinsey in London—not a case interview.
  • If all goes well, you'll be invited to full interview rounds: typically 2–4 sessions combining case studies and personal‐experience interviews (PEI) with senior team members.

How to prepare:

  1. Polish your pitch – Quick CV summary + why delivery consulting, why McKinsey, why London.
  2. Have motivation answers ready – “Why consulting?”, “Why McKinsey?”, “Why now/London?”
  3. One strong PEI example – Use STAR to tell a concise story of leadership or impact.
  4. Prepare questions – Ask about the role, success factors in the office, or project environment.
  5. Get logistics right – Quiet space, good connection, minimal distractions.

This is a recruiter screening to confirm your fit. Next come full rounds with case + PEI.

Feel free to reach out if you need any further help!

Best,

Evelina

Hi,

This sounds like a screening call, done by the recruiting team/HR.

I would treat it as a mini-fit interview. It's just as they have briefed you - they want to know about your background and your aspirations to confirm how strong a fit you are for the role/firm.

I wouldn't be to worried about this, but I would still make sure my stories are concise and impactful enough for the typical question - e.g. why this role, why now, why McK, etc

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the progress in the application process with McKinsey thus far!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your questions:

  • First of all, this screening call is a standard part of the process for some non-traditional tracks like Delivery roles.
  • Moreover, these initial calls are typically used to validate your motivation and overall fit with the consulting firm. Therefore, I would advise you to prepare short, clear answers to "Why McKinsey?", "Why consulting/delivery?", and "Why now?". Have a quick career walk-through ready and one strong story about impact or leadership just in case.

You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming McKinsey interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

This is just a screening call — its goal is to check your profile, validate what’s on your resume, and understand your motivation. Nothing technical, nothing case-related.

What matters most: show up on time, be energetic, and use the opportunity to ask anything you’re unclear about in the process.

Hi there,

Q: They said it's only 15min to learn about me and career aspirations. Does anyone know if this is normal? And how should I prepare for this interview? And how should I prepare for this interview?

Sometimes they do so before the actual case interviews. Usually these calls include:

  1. Alignment on the next steps of the process and/or
  2. Fit-only interview (your case)

You can find some of the most common below:

  1. Tell me about yourself
  2. Why consulting
  3. Why our company
  4. Give me an example of when you led a team
  5. Tell me about a time when you had to convince someone
  6. What has been your major achievement so far
  7. Tell me about a time when you failed
  8. Why should we hire you

Questions 4, 5 and 6 are related to PEI and they are not usually asked in screening calls, but I would recommend preparing for them as well just in case.

Good luck!

Francesco

Hi there,

This 'extra' discussion is rather common and it's not an evaluative stage of the recruitment process.

They brief you on how the process will move forward, validate once again that you have the right experience to be relevant for the role, and then align on interviewing timelines.

The best way to prepare is to see if you have any questions about the process or the role that you want to discuss with the recruiter. Re-read your CV as well to refresh your mind on any past experiences in case they have any questions.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Best,
Cristian
