Consulting Offer Negotiation: should I ask about RSU (Restricted Stock Unit)?

I recently got an offer from a listed consulting firm (think OW, FTI, Accenture, Booz Allen Hamilton) in Asia and I'm currently negotiating the compensation.

Experts on PrepLounge seem to focus on sign-on bonus apart from base salary, and none mentioned RSU. RSU seems very common for firms in USA. Apart from start-ups, even established firms such as Walmart and Yahoo give out RSU for all levels.

Considering that (1) I got an offer from a listed consulting firm (2) I'm based in Asia: do you think RSU should be something that I should negotiate? How Common is RSU under such context?

Hello,

I have not heard of RSUs being offered at consulting companies. RSUs are mostly used in the tech/startup world with companies that are yet to go public. Most consulting firms are structured as partnerships, and do not issue RSUs. However, if you think this is something the firm you are joining might offer, you can always ask employees there or HR to confirm.

Hi there!

I haven't yet heard of RSU within the context of consulting firms. It's something that's more common in tech or retail.

I'd recommend you focus on the other elements of the offer that you could further negotiate.

Best,
Cristian

Hi there,

First, if you truly want to maximize your contract, hire a coach. 1 session to potentially get $5-$10k (or more)….

RSU is not something that a consulting firm will have. RSU is for the tech world and is offered for a firm that hopes to go public one day or is public. Consulting firms don't do this.

Congrats on the offer by the way - definitely negotiate!

Hi,

I'm based in Asia and have not heard of any of my friends being offered RSUs.

If you want to have a more detailed chat, drop me a dm with the specifics of the firm and I can ask around.
