Company Role

I contacted a recruiter regarding the recruitment process for a particular team at a consulting firm. The recruiter replied, stating that they do not hire recent graduates for that team and look for more experienced professionals. However, I have recently connected with and spoken to fresh graduates who are currently working on that same team. They also asked for clarification on the specific job opening I was referring to though I was just reaching out to ask when the recruitment cycle is for the position. I'm uncertain about the reason behind this discrepancy, and I'm unsure how to proceed with my response.

Hi there,

Q: I'm uncertain about the reason behind this discrepancy, and I'm unsure how to proceed with my response.

Possibly they are not hiring new grads for that team now, but they did in the past.

Possible options you have are:

  1. Consider a different position for the same company
  2. Check the same position and company in 3-6 months to see if there are possible openings then
  3. Check the same position in different companies

Good luck!

Hi there,

With networking always go where the winds blow. In this case, the recruiter is telling you they are not interested. There is no response you can give.

Whether that's because they used to recruit recent grads and now have enough so do not need to, or he/she just doesn't like your profile, it doesn't really matter. You drop it.

Keep networking and going along the channels where people show interest in your profile. You can't win them all!

Hi there,

It's possible that even though they did recruit fresh graduates for that role, they no longer do that.

If I were you, I'd reach out to HR and clarify that you are interested in their overall application cycles and whether any of them apply to you.

Beyond this, I would make sure to apply to multiple firms. It's important to have a diversified approach in the recruitment process. The article below provides an overview of how to achieve this:

The situation you describe is indeed puzzling, and it's not uncommon to feel uncertain about how to proceed. Here are a few considerations and steps you could take:

1. Cross-verify: It could be that there was a misunderstanding or miscommunication. Make sure that the job role and the team you've asked about align exactly with the team and position where you know recent graduates have been placed. Additionally, keep in mind it is possible that they may no longer be hiring for the same experience they once did due to changing economic conditions.

2. Analyze the differences: The recent graduates you have spoken to might have been exceptions or hired under a different program, or perhaps their role slightly differs from the one you are interested in. They might also have had previous relevant internship or work experience that played a role in their selection for the team.

3. Your follow-up: Reply to the recruiter's email and politely ask for clarification. You could mention that you have recently spoken to recent graduates on the team, which led to your initial query about recruitment for recent graduates. Ensure to be respectful and professional in your tone, and express your genuine interest in the team and position.

You could also ask for guidance on the best way for a recent graduate like yourself to eventually be considered for a role on that team, considering your interest in the area they work on. This could provide you with valuable advice and keep the door open for future opportunities.

Remember, recruiters are usually the first point of contact in the hiring process, and building a positive relationship with them can only be beneficial in your job search. Best of luck!

Hi there,

if a recruiter gives you that response based on you simply inquiring about the recruiting process, there is no point in you pursuing this particular opening any further. You will not be able to “convince” the recruiter that hiring more recent graduates is actually what they should be doing - you simply don't match the profile they currently seek.

Don't get hung up on this - just keep looking further. There are likely similar teams at other firms you could go after for now.

Good luck

Hi,

If we break down the potential reasons:

  1. The recruiter is wrong
    1. The recruiter does not have the correct information/was not updated on the latest policy
    2. The recruiter knows the correct information but is choosing to tell you the wrong information
      • e.g. They want to reject you and are using this as a reason
  2. The recruiter is correct
    1. The policy has recently changed
      • e.g. HC needs have recently changed and so they don't need fresh grads anymore
      • e.g. They recently realize they need more experienced professionals than what they previously planned
    2. The policy has not changed
      • e.g. All along they had a quota for this team for a mix of Fresh Grads and Experienced Professionals. The Quota for Fresh Grads has been filled

I think its a very small chance that #1A is a possibility. Sure you can try to clarify one more time, assuming you have a network within the firm to verify it. But likely the reasons are either in #1B or in #2A or #2B. So then what's important is to work on applying to other firms.

All the best!

Hello,

They may have changed their recruiting practices since hiring those fresh graduates, or may not be looking for recent graduates at this point in time. I would go with what the recruiter says, unfortunately - there is no incentive for them to lie to you if they are actually hiring recent graduates. It sounds like you're being very proactive in reaching out to people and networking though, which is excellent - keep doing that and look for other opportunities. Best of luck!

It just means they don't need any new fresh graduates at this point in time. Simple as that.
