Change of location- Mckinsey

Hi

Before joining for my role in McK in a certain location, I was informed that there were some issues in getting the required paperwork for the permit. So, McK suggested me to start the role in their office in my current location for an initial period of a few months till they gather the necessary documentation.

My questions:

Q1.  Will this change the salary, joining bonus and other benefits? i.e. will I get another offer?

Q2.  Is there a possibility to continue in my current location after the initial period is over if I perform well?

Q3.  Since my my future location and current location is in the same region, will they engage me on projects related to the current location or the future location?

Thank you in advance for any feedback the community can provide me.

Hi there,

Congratulations on the McKinsey offer! In terms of your questions:

1)  Will this change the salary, joining bonus and other benefits? i.e. will I get another offer?

This is something you should clarify with HR.

2)  Is there a possibility to continue in my current location after the initial period is over if I perform well?

I would recommend to clarify also this point with HR.

3)  Since my future location and current location are in the same region, will they engage me on projects related to the current location or the future location?

Most likely this will depend on the availability of projects.

Best,

Francesco

Hi there,

First of all, I am sorry to hear about the situation you are in, despite receiving an offer from McKinsey!

I think this is an interesting question that may be relevant for many people. I would be happy to share my thoughts on it:

  • First of all, I would highly advise you to reach out to the recruiter to learn more about your total compensation and the possibility of switching to your target office once visa requirements are met, since nobody here knows for certain.
  • Moreover, regarding whether you will work on projects in your target office's area or not, without more information about the specific region, it is very hard to provide a meaningful answer.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to address your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Let's start from your last question. And please realize I am only guessing here, as only they can really tell you what their plan is.

3. Most likely you will be on projects related to the future location. They are the ones that want to hire you, they probably need you now and in any case would rather be the ones training you.

2. Given what I just said, this probably does not really apply, as you'll be staffed to the future location. In any case, there's probably a reason why it's that office hiring you (and not the one in your current location). I dont' know the reason, but it kind of feels like the office where you are didn't want to hire you, and the other did…

1. It shouldn't, but on the other hand you don't have a contract with the future region. This is really about how can offices handle this kind of exception (and the exact risk of you not getting a permit), and I honestly don't know how flexible they are on approving these things. While for sign up bonus this should not be a thing, for base salary, it may be the case.

1. It shouldn't. But… it really depends on how they said it. The fact is that you don't have a contract with the other location (I guess) but probably with the current one. So it really depends on how they are negotiating this with you and what they are actually able to do.

2. You were not hired for that location - I would find that strange. They probably want you in the new location. But again, that is something that only they can clarify, although I suggest being careful when approaching that topic.

3. My guess is that you'll be on projects with the future

Hi there,

Congrats on the offer and sorry to hear about the location change.

My #1 recommendation is to get this promise in writing

Q1.  Will this change the salary, joining bonus and other benefits? i.e. will I get another offer?

It should not…but double-check with the recruiter. If they're putting you in a lower cost office/country this might be a bit of a win for you!

Q2.  Is there a possibility to continue in my current location after the initial period is over if I perform well?

My guess would be yes. Double-check with them.

Q3.  Since my my future location and current location is in the same region, will they engage me on projects related to the current location or the future location?

McKinsey is super flexible in geographic location. I would say that in both your current and future office they will put you on projects in both your current and future office. As in, it will be quite fluid.

This is very normal unfortunately where there are visa challenges.

In terms of your questions:

Q1.  Will this change the salary, joining bonus and other benefits? i.e. will I get another offer? You should ask recruiting, I suspect not but check

Q2.  Is there a possibility to continue in my current location after the initial period is over if I perform well?  I'm sure there is - locations are pretty flexible once you're in the organisation as long as you have good relationships with the partners

Q3.  Since my my future location and current location is in the same region, will they engage me on projects related to the current location or the future location?  Again speak with recruiting who will put you in touch with staffing. It varies by country e.g., in the USA you can be staffed across the country, in Europe it's much harder

Good luck!
