Chances to have passed first round McKinsey

Hi,

I had my first round interview yesterday with McKinsey for an internship.

As I needed quite some guidance on a (in hindsight) very easy math question regarding logic I think I have failed. When it came to the calculation, though, I have solved it quickly.

I know I should not be speculating and that I cannot change what I have done but I am curious to hear your opinion.

Given that I did well on the Imbellus and that PEI and the rest of the case was strong based on chemistry and his reactions (stating stuff like “good”, “very interesting”), do you think I am nonetheless screwed?

Thanks

Hard to say, but you cant influence it now, hence, let's see what comes out. The result will depend on how well you did and how well your peers did.

Crossing fingers!

I know it's really hard but try not to think about it. It's impossible to tell how you performed - you never know a) what they really thought of you; and b) what happens when the two interviewers get together and consider you in the round. I totally messed up the maths in the first round and was let through - with the very clear feedback that it had to be better in the second round. It's impossible to tell.

Good luck - I've got everything crossed for you!

Hi there,

No, not necessarily.

It's totally ok to make mistakes. I also made some in my final interview in terms of coming up with the approach and still passed. The interviewer tries to look at the candidate across several dimensions and even if you make a mistake, they want to rather understand how you react to it and how you move on, rather than finding a reason to reject you because of it.

Hope you hear good news soon!

Best,

Cristian

It can also be a good thing if a candidate takes the interviewer’s feedback during a case to pivot from their initial “wrong” approach to something that solves the case. So receiving some guidance during the interview doesn’t automatically mean failure.

On the flip side, having the interviewer say things like “good” or “very interesting” doesn’t mean you nailed the interview.

It’s not possible to predict the outcome from the outside and all you have to do is wait and see unfortunately.
I hope the feedback will be in your favor.

Hi there,

Q: Given that I did well on the Imbellus and that PEI and the rest of the case was strong based on chemistry and his reactions (stating stuff like “good”, “very interesting”), do you think I am nonetheless screwed?

The short answer is that you could make a mistake and not be rejected. However, it is not possible for anyone but the interviewer to evaluate your particular case now.

Although I understand your desire to get a clear answer on your performance, the only thing you can do now is to act on what is in your control, that is (i) prepare for other interviews/ apply to other companies and/or (ii) wait for the results.

Good luck!

Francesco

Dude, we don't have the crystal ball and we weren't in the room with you.
Just wait and get the most out of your experience.

I do know that it is of course not possible to know for sure whether it is enough. I was hoping someone has some insight regarding whether bombing one part leads to a rejection straight away.
I also understand that it can be annoying because I assume others have asked similar questions before. However, please consider that for many this interview represents the end of a long preparation process and it is hard not to think about ones performance.

I have no clue.

The interviewer stating “good” or “very interesting” means nothing - they will do this to average candidates just to keep them motivated and progressing (i.e., to make sure it is a positive interaction).
- making a mistake is the end of the world.

So basically, it is impossible to tell.

Makes sense, interesting! What do you mean, though, that they state this to average candidates? That if you do exceptionally well, they will not encourage you further? Thank you!
