Can someone explain OCR to me?

Structured on-campus MBA  recruiting must differ somewhat from typical MBB recruiting. Especially the initial stages of events and networking. Also, maybe there are some insights on pre-MBA programs you can share.

I recently got into HSW. Can anyone walk me through how OCR works from start to finish, and how to do it successfully?

Hi there!

That's a great question and it's really good that you're looking into this in advance.

Yes, campus recruiting does differ and it does have its advantages and disadvantages.

The big advantage is that if you are in a target school, the friction related to recruiting is removed. They come on campus, introduce themselves, and make themselves available for questions. They offer info sessions, dinners, and events of all kinds.

The disadvantage is that they make themselves available to everybody and thus create the opportunity for themselves to choose only the best of the best of the candidates.

My strong recommendation would be to join these sorts of info sessions but also don't overdo them. The best that you can get out of them is an understanding of how the firm works and how recruiting works and also develop a relationship with one of the consultants so they potentially offer you a referral.

But going to the events will not get you the actual job. Once again, at most, it increases the chances of you getting to the interview.

The mistake that many candidates make is that they go to all the events and have no time left to prepare for the actual interviews. So they eventually get referrals but fail due to their performance.

Hope you found this helpful.

Hi,

OCR means that your school is a target school and is thus the recipient of deliberate recruiting efforts by firms.

Typically, firms recruiting teams will work with your schools career center/services to align on a recruiting event calendar for the year. This will have a mixture of events, potentially including events like coffee chats, office visits, presentations etc.

As a student, you will be given all the information on these events, including application deadlines etc.

Some of these events will be exclusive, some will not.

Thus, to navigate this properly:

  1. Ensure your application (CV, CL) is in tip-top shape
  2. Start networking earlier to get an advantage in the process (e.g. referrals)

All the best!

Hi there,

Basically, you have a drastically improved chance of success. Check this out:

Look at that…at Stern, those who had 10+ touchpoints with a given firm (including events and school-organized coffee chats) had an 80% chance of being invited to interview!

Basically, take advantage of every single possible event/networking opportunity they offer.
