I was wondering if it is taboo or bad practice to network with people who are company alums who have now exited into other industries (e.g., tech, PE). I am genuinely curious about their experience at/after the firm, but I want to make sure that this is not something that is "frowned upon."
You could for sure. With this in mind, I would leverage your internship opportunity to find out as much as you can about the areas you are interested in (i.e. Tech, PE) so you can have more substance and content to discuss with the individuals you would want to consult with.
So in your internship, look for the Partners and leaders in PE and Tech / Digital (for example) and try network and engage with them first to see what work has been in those areas.

Yes you can, if it is just for learning purposes only.
However, be honest and clear about your intent when you reach out and clearly articulate what you are looking for from the conversation so there is no misunderstanding.
Being clear is important since some of the alums maybe in touch with their colleagues in your firm so you want to avoid perception of any conflict of interest.
