Breaking into Consulting in London (entry level) – Non-STEM Background

Hi everyone,

I graduated with a First-Class degree in Business Management from the University of Exeter last summer. At the time of graduating, I didn’t have much work experience or any internships, but I was very keen to pursue a career in consulting. To build my CV, I’ve spent the past 9 months completing three 3-month internships — one in property investment, one focused in CRM/ marketing, and one in corporate finance at a property company.

I’m now actively applying to consulting roles/ grad schemes in London, but I’m finding it difficult to come across graduate openings — many seem closed or no mention of it. I am not coming from an economics or STEM background - do I still have a shot?  (and I’m not targeting MBB, but more Tier 2 firms and strong boutiques).

Do I still stand a realistic chance of breaking into consulting,

Tips on how to best position my background and experience,

Whether I should consider alternative paths for now (e.g., relevant roles in industry) and reapply later.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi there,

You do have a shot in consulting and it's great that you went ahead and took active steps (the internships) to bring you further in this direction.

What you need, to begin with, is to take a step back and create an overview of all the firms that you'd want to target.

Then go beyond what's available on their website and try to have a chat with their recruiter. This can sometimes prove tricky, but if you follow-up with them or ask a consultant from the firm to put you in touch with them directly, it will help clarify whether they are actively recruiting or not.

And it's important to go broad. Don't rule out the MBBs or any other firms at this point. Try instead to progress with as many of them as possible to the next stage in the application process.

You might find this guide helpful as you strategise your application process:

Hey there,

The reason why grad roles seem closed now is because the London recruiting cycle doesn't start till September-Oct. Around then is when you will start seeing more recruiting activities (e.g., networking events) happening as well.

I personally landed a grad role in MBB consulting without prior consulting internship or case comp experience, and had several colleagues who did non-STEM non-Economics degrees (e.g., history) so i wouldn't be too worried.

However, given Exeter is a semi-target school i would focus on really nailing your CV (e.g., highlight areas where you've owned things end to end and its impact) and trying multiple channels to get your CV out (e.g., networking). Happy to chat more in a session where I can help you with your CV and game planning for recruiting season.

hey there :)

yes, you absolutely still have a shot! your internships are relevant, and a First from Exeter is respected. highlight problem-solving, analytical thinking, and impact from your roles, even if not from a STEM background. tailor your CV for each firm, and network actively with consultants at your target firms. also check boutique firms and Tier 2s like Simon-Kucher, Roland Berger, or OC&C who often recruit on a rolling basis. if doors don’t open now, a year in strategy, finance, or ops in industry can be a strong re-entry point.

best, Alessa 😊

Hi there,

If your grades are solid and you’ve got internship experience across a few sectors, you’ve got a fair shot at landing a role in strategic consulting.

But here’s the catch: ignore the portals. Focus on people.

Start networking now — with current consultants, recruiters, and alumni from your university. Learn how each firm works, how to apply smart, and how to time your application for entry-level cycles.

No one’s going to hand you the opportunity. You have to make your own way in. That’s how this game works.

Best,

Alberto

Hi,

Great to hear your motivations and drive to break into consulting. I broke into consulting with a History degree and zero internships, while it is not easy it is definitely still possible.

I write about how to position yourself and some tips here:

You absolutely have a shot.

London recruiting will kick off in earnest slightly later in the year, so you'll see more opportunities then.

The best thing to do is longlist the firms you're interested in working for, speak to recruiting teams from those firms, and network your way to a referrals from current consultants.

Current consultants (if senior enough) will also be able to tell you about the current recruiting situation at their company if you're not able to get hold of recruiters.
