Background Check

Dear Community Members,

Recently got an offer from an MBB as an experienced hire in continental europe contingent to BGC, and wanted to quit after the latter is done, but I am currently being pressured to quit by HR. I have nothing to hide, nor have lied or anything on cv. just want to sleep well at night. How should I go about it? to let HR understand, that I am not quitting till this thing is cleared up?  If I proceed this way it could delay my start date to 1-2 months. will the offer be revoked in this scenario, or do they revoke offers for such things? any help is much appreciated

Ex-McKinsey / 100% offer rate / LBS / Principle driven / Real case/ If you get the interview, you should get the offer!

Hi there. I think you have to start the exiting process with your current company once you receive the offer, as the background check company will call your current company to verify your employment information, and you don't want your current boss to be shocked by this.

How I did it when I was joining McKinsey was:
Received the offer => Informed my boss from my previous company, thanked him and asked for his help to verify everything for background check => Officially resign with HR => Joined McKinsey

Final advice, don't do anything in a rush. MBB won't care much if you delay on-boarding for 1-2 months (Max you can delay it for 12 months). You don't want to rush things and risk damaging your relationship with any party.

Hope this helps!

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the offer!

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for quite a lot of users, so I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • Generally speaking and independent of local European employment laws, nobody is allowed to force you into quitting your job. Obviously, you still need to comply with local notice periods or individual arrangements, but I would advise you not to let them pressure you.
  • Moreover, while in most probably 99.9% of the cases the background check will not dig up something that will your future employer make revoke the offer, I understand that you first want to have absolutely clarity. As such, if you feel you cannot avoid the pressure from our old employer, I would advise you to politely call the recruiter from your future employer and ask about the status of the background check.

In case you want a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare your upcoming career entry, please feel free to contact me directly.

I hope this helps,

Hagen

Hi there,

Congratulations on your offer!

Unless they decide to fire you, they cannot force you to quit your current job (actually, forcing someone to resign may be against the law in your country).

If you prefer to stick to your current job, just keep it until the background check is cleared. There is no reason to oblige to the HR pressure.

Best,

Francesco

Hi there,

Can you clarify why you are being pressured by HR to quit? Is it because you already told them about the offer?

In the future, please only tell your current company that you intend to leave once everything is locked in - you never know and you don't owe them anything other than the notice period in your contract.

In regards to quitting, I advise you to resist this until you have a clear start date with MBB, but there's nothing you can really do to accelerate their background check.

Best of luck.

You don't have to quit. You have an offer and need a start date. After that, it's up to you to quit when you want as long as you are able to meet that start date.

I've heard about pressure to start quite often. Pressure to quit is the first time.

Hello!

The only thing they can do about it is fire you, they cannot force you to quit, so hold on there!

Cheers,

Clara
